STEELERS to show metal on Thanksgiving Thursday

American Football

Thanksgiving is famous for Pumpkin Pies, Turkey and NFL, which is fitting as this Thursday two of the three might be dished up to UK American Football fans with the NFL triple-header. The three games feature none of the top seven teams in the NFL and just two of the six have winning records so far. It is not the best selection of games although some winning bets will liven up the evening, so here is our guide to the best of the bets.

The opening game comes from Detroit (17:30, SKY SPORTS) where the Packers take on the Lions. The Lions are the 5/12 (BWIN) favourites as the Packers are likely to once more be without their star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The absence of Rodgers has resulted in Green Bay going winless in their last four games and bookmakers give them few hopes here offering them at 9/4 (STAN JAMES/betway) and with a start of six on the point spread . The Lions have lost their last two games though will welcome a return home where they have a record of three wins and two losses. The best bet comes in the anytime touchdown scorer market where I like Nate Burleson at 2/1 (ladbrokes). The Lions receiver was targeted ten times for 77 yards and a touchdown in the last game with the Bucs that marked his return to action following a car accident.

The second game of the day comes from Dallas where the Cowboys host the Raiders (21:30, SKY SPORTS). The Cowboys are the 1/4 (BETVICTOR) favourites for the game as they look to build on a 4-1 home record for the season where they average a NFC high 34.6 home points this season. Dallas now sit on top of the NFC East following a big victory over the Giants last weekend and will look to continue this momentum against an Oakland side who are 4-7 for the season and 1-4 away from home. The Raiders are as high 19/5 (boylesports/william hill) for the victory as they look to repeat their heroics of winning at Houston though this was against a Texans side currently on a run of nine straight losses. The best bet from this game again comes in the anytime touchdown scorer market where Jason Witten is 6/5 (bet365/SKYBET). The Cowboys tight-end got two touchdowns against the Giants and will fancy his chances against a Raiders side that has shipped 127 points in their last four games.

The final game of the NFL triple-header sees the Steelers take on the Ravens in Baltimore (01:30, SKY SPORTS). These two sides are 5-6 for the season with both teams among the half dozen sides that are tied for the sixth and final slot in the AFC play-offs. Bookmakers make the Ravens the 20/29 (sportingbet) favourites as they have a 4-1 home record for the season. They have though lost four of their last six games in total and face a Steelers side who have won each of their last three games. Pittsburgh can be backed at 11/10 (GENERAL) with a 2.5 start (GENERAL) and this looks worth an interest. The head-to-head record also suggest that Pittsburgh will come out on top as they are ahead 16-12 in meetings since 2002 which most crucially includes victory in their last two meetings (one of which was in October).

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Steelers with 2.5 start on point spread v Ravens, 11/10 (GENERAL)
SILVER: Jason Witten to score a touchdown anytime v Raiders, 6/5 (bet365/SKYBET)
BRONZE: Nate Burleson to score a touchdown anytime v Packers, 2/1 (ladbrokes)
