Newcastle will hope to continue their meteoric rise with a fifth straight Premier League win over strugglers Queens Park Rangers tomorrow (22nd November). Harry Redknapp`s away side will be buoyant despite their lowly position after a hard-earned draw with last season`s champions Manchester City followed positive performances against Liverpool and Chelsea and a victory against Aston Villa.
The Villa clash, in which Charlie Austin scored a brace to see Rangers win 2-0, followed the 3-2 defeat at home to Liverpool, coming unstuck with two Reds goals in the final minutes of added time.
Richard Dunne scored the 10th own-goal of his career to see Brendan Rodgers` men lead halfway through the second half only for Eduardo Vargas to level three minutes from time. Philippe Coutinho restored the lead in the 90th minute before Steven Gerrard turned the ball past Simon Mignolet in his own goal. A further scramble in the QPR box saw the Loftus Road outfit lose a much-needed point as Steven Caulker recorded the third own-goal of the match. It was a similar story against Chelsea, the unbeaten side taking the lead through Oscar`s screamer only to be pegged back by Austin`s fifth league goal. Eduardo Vargas` mistake cost Redknapp`s men another point, fouling Eden Hazard in the box. The Belgian then coolly placing the penalty kick.
QPR finally got their just desserts in a 2-2 tie with Manchester City with Austin scoring once again to break the deadlock. A Sergio Aguero shot meant both teams entered the dressing room level at half time before a Martin Demichelis own-goal put the R`s ahead once again. Aguero got his second of the game to share the spoils.
On-fire Austin could grab his seventh league goal against Newcastle at the weekend. He`s 8/1 with a number of bookmakers to score the opener or can be backed at 11/4 (betfred, ladbrokes, Totesport) to score at any time.
The former Burnley player will have to hit the back of the net against a defence who have kept a clean sheet in their last three games in all competitions, though an injury crisis has left Newcastle with only four fit defenders. Both Fabricio Colocchini (calf) and Steven Taylor (knee) are sidelined meaning that Paul Dummett and Mike Williamson will have to fill in at centre-half. Port Vale loanee Remie Streete returns to provide defensive back-up.
Clean sheet number one for United came in an unlikely victory over Manchester City in the fourth round of the League Cup. Rolando Aarons scored in the first half whilst Moussa Sissoko doubled the advantage against the run of play to knock out the holders.
Back in the league, the Magpies` second clean sheet came at home against last season`s league runners-up Liverpool. Substitute Ayoze Perez netted the only goal to continue the Reds turbulent form and see Alan Pardew`s men climb further up the table. He struck again in the team`s 2-0 win over West Brom last time out. The Spaniard grabbed the opener just after the second half before captain Colocchini hit the second.
Having hit his third of the season against the Baggies, 21-year-old Perez is 9/5 with paddy Power to score at any time against Queens Park Rangers. The same bookmaker is offering 11/1 on him scoring two.
Sticking with odds, it is the home team who are the favourites to continue their tremendous streak of form against the improving Londoners. It`s 10/11 with william hill should you think Newcastle will run out winners whilst an away victory is available at 19/5 with betfair. A tie is 11/4 with both bet365 and boylesports.
Apart from the Magpie`s defensive woes, further up the field Aarons (hamstring), Mehdi Abeid (toe) and Cheick Tiote (calf) are also out with Papiss Cisse facing a late fitness test.
Chilean pairing Mauricio Isla and Eduardo Vargas are doubts for the Hoops, whilst Adel Taarabt is still unavailable after groin troubles. Defender Yun Suk-Young is fit to play, however.
