Maria Maria to be on Song?

Wikipedia lists over 20 songs with the name Maria in the title and punters will be hoping the Russian is in tune at Wimbledon as she is the 14/5 (sportingbet) favourite to be the Queen of Wimbledon.

Number one seed Sharapova has had a great 2012 returning back to the top of her game as world number one, winning three tour titles this year including the recent French Open. The Russian also made the final of the other grand slam this year (in Australia) and as such starts as deserved favourite 14/5 (sportingbet) for the Wimbledon Ladies title. Sharapova reached the final at Wimbledon last year and is a former winner here in 2004. Playing injury free and with a serve-volley game to suit Wimbledon it would appear Sharapova has all the tools in her arsenal to fire herself to the title. Should the Russian be off-key though, who will be the biggest hit at Wimbledon?

Serena Williams is next in the betting at 3/1 (general) and the American loves Wimbledon, making the final in three of the last four years (winning two of those). Williams has been playing some of her best tennis for a while this year (although did exit the French Open in round one) and looks like being a real contender. The American is placed in the bottom half of the draw, which is the toughest. She is scheduled to face defending champion Petra Kvitova in the last eight. Kvitova is the third favourite at 13/2 (BetVictor/Coral) and will be hoping a return to grass will see a return to form. The left-hand serve and power game could blow many opponents away and the clash with Williams should make for a fascinating last eight match. It does however make the betting a little tricky and it may be best to swerve both these players.

The fourth favourite in the market is Victoria Azarenka who is 9/1 (BetVictor) and is in the bottom section of the draw with Williams and Kvitova. Azarenka won the Australian Open this year and made the semi-finals here last year, but did not look good in Paris and has not appeared on court since then.

After these four the price rise a lot and next up is Kim Clijsters who is 25/1 (Sportingbet/BetVictor/Bwin) to land the title. There is little doubt that Clijsters is one of the most talented players to ever play the game, but her career is coming to the end (for the second time). Clijsters skipped the clay court season to concentrate on Wimbledon and this could either be seen as a good thing or a bad thing.

Na Li and Venus Williams are next in the betting at 33/1(Venus with sportingbet and BetVictor/Li with paddy Power and Stan James), while value seekers might do well to look at the 40/1 (Bodog) on offer over Angelique Kerber. The German made the final at Eastbourne and has risen to number nine in the rankings and is in the weaker top half section. Nadia Petrova at 150/1 (general) has shown good form in the current grass season and in an open quarter could travel far. Austrian Tamira Paszek won at Eastbourne and if she gets past Caroline Wozniacki in round one then the 200/1 at sportingbet will start to look great value.

It promises to be a wide open battle to see who finishes top of the charts.
