Twenty20 Word Cup

Australia are the 10/3 (STAN JAMES) favourites for the Twenty20 World Cup which steps up a gear when the Super 10 stage begin on Friday with all the major nations (and England) entering the event. The team from down under are surprising favourites for me as they have never won the trophy before and crucially the event is in Asia. In ten attempts at beating India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Asia the Australians have managed to do so just twice. In addition the absence of Mitchell Johnson and the lack of spinner means that the favourites must be opposed.

Sri Lanka are the 11/2 (GENERAL) second favourites and I would much rather be with the 2012 runners-up at these bigger prices. The Asian side will be confortable with conditions and pitches in Bangladesh. In addition they are the number one ranked team in the official ICC rankings. Throw in a nice group that features England, New Zealand, South Africa and another qualifier and it becomes clear that the Sri Lanka side look the best value.

India are also 11/2 (betfair SPORTSBOOK/betway/YOU WIN) and the Indians looked impressive in a recent warmup victory over England and have a super strong batting lineup. No side has a better win ratio against the top eight teams in the last two years than the Indians and like Sri Lanka they should favour the conditions in Bangladesh. The problem is they are in a tough group with defending champions West Indies (7/1-GENERAL), Pakistan

(9/1-boylesports) and Australia all capable of qualifying. A better bet then is New Zealand to make the last four at 11/10 (william hill). The Black Caps tend to do well at this form of the game and have the sharpest captain around in Brendan McCullum. I can not see them beating Sri Lanka though they should have a chance against the mentally brittle South Africa and a huge chance against the badly out of form England. An alternative way to bet is to take the 6/5 (SPREADEX) are offering on Asia behind the continent of the winner as this bet will also include India, Pakistan and hosts Bangladesh.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Sri Lanka to win the Twenty20 World Cup, 11/2 (GENERAL)
Asian continent winner of Twenty20, 6/5 (SPREADEX)
New Zealand to make the semi-finals, 11/10 (william hill)

PLAYER OUTRIGHTS

The last four Twenty20 tournaments have seen an opener finish as the highest scoring batsman so it does not make any sense to look further than those batting one and two when placing our bets on this market. David Warner is the 10/1 (WINNER) market leader ahead of Virat Kohli (11/1-bet365), Chris Gayle (12/1-paddy Power/WINNER) and Aaron Fitch (12/1-bet365). All four have strong claims though with a number of firms going four places in the each-way stakes it makes sense to have a little each-way interest. Martin Guptil hit a 62 in a recent match with Australia and at 33/1 (GENERAL) represents good each-way value as the New Zealand opener is placed in the weaker of the two groups.

The bowling market is headed by Saeed Amjal (10/1-GENERAL), Sunil Narine (10/1-ladbrokes) and Lastih Malinga (12/1-WINNER). The best bet in the bowler market comes from Sri Lanka though it is not Malinga who is our selection rather his colleague Ajantha Mendis. Mendis goes off at 18/1 (STAN JAMES) and this looks better value than Malinga, especially as Mendis was the leading wicket taker in this tournament in 2012.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Martin Guptil top batsman, ew, 33/1 (GENERAL)
Ajantha Mendis, top bowler, ew 18/1 (STAN JAMES)
