Real Sociedad vs. Athletic Bilbao - Betting preview and odds

September 27, 2015 19:30pm - Anoeta Stadium

La Liga

The Spanish city of San Sebastian plays host to the Basque derby on Sunday night as David Moyes’ Real Sociedad take on fierce rivals Athletic Bilbao at Estadio Municipal de Anoeta.

Lions lacking roar

Both teams have picked up just a single win this season and sit in the lower half of the table however, it is the team from Bilbao who have under-performed the most. They lost four out of their first five games including a 2-0 loss away to Basque Country minnows Eibar with their only win coming against fellow strugglers Getafe. As a result, Ernesto Valerde’s team are positioned just one point above the relegation zone on three points.

Crucial win for win Moyes

David Moyes was feeling the pressure last week after his team failed to win any of their opening four games, but a win away to Granada (thanks to a Immanuel Aigrette hat-trick) has given his squad a much-needed boost ahead of this local derby clash.

The former Everton boss had been expected to build on last year’s steady progress by guiding his team towards the European qualification places. And although it is still early days, he may find himself under pressure again if his team continues to take backward steps. A win against Athletic would certainly give the former Manchester United boss some leverage with the board and the fans.

Team news

Athletic Club could welcome back Mike San Jose and Oscar de Marcos although Iker Muniain is still unavailable.

Meanwhile for La Real, Estaban Granero is still a doubt but Alberto de la Bella should be available for selection.

Betting odds and tips

The away side have not won at this venue since 2011 and they are coming into the game in poor form. La Real have the momentum on their side as well as home advantage however, this is a derby game and it really is a tough one to call.

Last season this fixture ended in a 1-1 stalemate and a repeat of that scoreline looks tempting at 6/1with Unibet.

Aggiretxe has already bagged four goals this season for Moyes’ men despite having only started two games. He can be backed at 13/5 to score anytime with Bet365.
