Senior Open Championship

Fred Couples will defend the Senior Open Championship that he won 12 months ago at Turnberry. Bookmakers make the American the 6/1 (sportingbet) for this the fifth and final major of the seniors season. The 53-year-old is undoubtedly the best player on the seniors circuit having come in the top 15 in 11 of the 12 majors that he has competed in since joining. There could be some value in taking him on as he has not won any of the four Majors this year. The American also shot a 19 over par here in the 1998 Open Championship.

If Couples is the star player then the form man has to be Kenny Perry who has won each of the last two Majors. Perry though is absent as hates links golf.

Bernhard Langer is the 12/1 (bet365) second favourite and he is a former winner in 2010 at Carnoustie. The German came tied 14th in the Senior’s US Open and is one to watch.

Tom Lehman is Mr Consistent and in his four years on the Tour he has won seven titles including three Majors. He has 11 top ten finishes in this event and made the cut last weekend at Muirfield suggesting he is still playing as well as ever. Michael Allen is an 18/1 (GENERAL) chance and he arrives here on the back of a top five in the US Senior Open and he has seven top ten finishes this year.

Mark O’Meara is a 20/1 (sportingbet) chance at a course that has very happy memories for him as it was here in 1998 where he won the Open Championship. The American is clearly in form as well as he opened with a round of 67 at Muirfield before eventually coming tied 53th and is the headline selection.

Duffy Waldorff is also a 20/1 (CORAL) chance and he has to be respected in the Majors as he has finished top ten in each of the four events so far this year.

Also a 20/1 (GENERAL) chance is Colin Montgomerie who was tied 30th in the US Seniors Open though his lack of any major win (senior or non senior) counts against him.

Corey Pavin is a 25/1 (GENERAL) chance and he came tied third in the US Seniors Open and tied for ninth in the Senior Players Championship. Also a 25/1 (GENERAL) chance is Mark Calcavecchia who was hugely disappointing in the US Seniors Open coming tied 54th. Before that though he had seven top ten finishes in the eight previous starts and could offer some good each-way value.

One name who always has to be respected on links courses is Tom Watson who at 63-years-old continues to still produce some excellent golf including an opening round 70 at Murifield. The American is a three time winner of the senior version of the event and has never failed to make the cut. At odds of 33/1 (GENERAL) he has to be taken each-way.

A final selection for the portfolio is a punt on Constantino Rocco who is a 400/1 (bet365/SPREADEX) chance and though the Italian has not done much on the Senior Tour he has to be worth an interest at that price. He did come tied 33rd in an event in Switzerland including two finla rounds of 69 that showed a player finding his game. Rocco also came top ten here in the Open in 1998 and clearly will be at home on the course.

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Mark O’Meara, each-way, 20/1 (SPORTINGBET)
SILVER: Tom Watson, each-way, 33/1 (GENERAL)
BRONZE: Constantino Rocco, each-way, 400/1 (bet365/SPREADEX)
