Sebastian Vettel cut the gap in the Formula One Drivers championship to 29 points after victory in the Singapore Grand Prix. The German (who was tipped for race success here) held off Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso to wrap up maximum points. The Red Bull was in second place when a gearbox failure took out race leader Lewis Hamilton and allowed Vettel to take control.

Alonso (who finished third) still is the favourite for the title and is a best priced 4/7 (Bodog) for the title as he has a 29 point lead with six races remaining. The third place the Spaniard secured in Singapore marks the eighth time this season that he has finished on the podium. It is this consistency that means it looks tough for a rival to catch him in the overall standings. The one most likely to catch Alonso is Sebastian Vettel who is now an 11/4 (general) chance. The Red Bull driver won two and finished second in three of the last four races last season and won three of the last four races in 2010 so can end the season strong. Lewis Hamilton is third in the betting at 9/1 (bet365/ladbrokes) though this looks a little short on a driver who is some 52 points behind Alonso. The Brit probably saw his title hopes gone when he was forced to retire in Singapore. Jenson Button finished second in Singapore to continue his good end to the season though his bad start means it looks unlikely that he will catch Alosno. The Brit is 70/1 (bet365) for the title. Australian Mark Webber is 100/1 (Blue Sq/888 Sport) though at 62 points behind Alonso he also looks out of the running. Outside of Alonso and Vettel the only driver who has a chance of the title is Kimi Raikkonen who sits 45 behind the leader. The Finn is 30/1 (bet365) though it is hard to side with a driver who has yet to pick up a win this season.

The Constructors title race is a little more open with four teams still capable of winning this. It is Red Bull at 8/11 (william hill) who are the current favourites and the current standings leader. Some 37 points behind them in second are McLaren-Mercedes who represent some value at 6/4 (betfred) with some six races still to go. Button and Hamilton are expected to be in the mix in the last six and with Australian Mark Webber being out of the points in the last two races for Red Bull their combined effort could be more than that of Sebastian Vettel. Ferrari are also in the mix and are 28/1 (Skybet/BetVictor) and are 53 points off Red Bull. The problem for Ferrari though is that Massa is having a terrible season and like Webber is not getting among the points enough. Lotus-Renault are 40/1 (general) outsiders and at 67 points behind probably have too much to do.

The next F1 race is in two weeks time when the Japanese Grand Prix takes centre stage. It is 5/2 (betfred/Stan James/188 Bet) that Lewis Hamilton wins the race. The Brit is qualifying so well that if the car is over the problems that caused him to withdraw in Singapore then he is a deserved favourite.

Jenson Button is 5/1 (general) to claim a race that he won in 2011 while Sebastian Vettel is 11/2 (BetVictor/Blue Sq/888 Sport). At 6/1 (general) is the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso while the Lotus duo of Kimi Raikkonen are 10/1 (ladbrokes) and Romain Grosjean are 14/1 (general). We will have full preview of the race nearer the time.
