Hit the jackpot with improving Gallipot

Cambridgeshire Meeting

John Gosden`s progressive Gallipot is the best bet on the opening day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting at Newmarket.

Gallipot will be among the favourites for the Princess Royal Richard Hambro EBF Stakes, a Listed race for fillies and mares over a mile and a half on Newmarket`s Rowley Mile Course, and deservedly so based on her improving form.

Three-year-olds have a terrific record in this event and the daughter of Galileo, owned by the same connections who race Nathaniel, looks like the pick of the seven of them among the 15 declarations. She has stepped up a level with every one of her eight runs and performed especially well on her last racecourse appearance, finishing a close fourth behind Wild Coco in the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster. That was a Group Two contest over the St Leger trip, whereas her two victories have been in races over 11 furlongs. A mile and a half really does shape as though it will be her ideal trip.

On lines through Wild Coco, Gallipot has the beating of many of the other fancied runners even if she does not improve upon her last performance. However, there is no reason to think that she will not produce an even better effort this time and, as such, she is very much the one to beat.

The British betting public will back Sequence into a shorter price than she merits because her owner is no other than Queen Elizabeth II and her runners always jump from the stalls under their true odds. That is just the way it is.

The feature race of the day is the Somerville Tattersall Stakes, a Group Three contest over seven furlongs for juvenile colts and geldings in which favourites have a dreadful record. Only one market leader has won the event in the last 10 years. Back Havana Gold to make light of that.

The two-year-old son of Teofilo would have an unblemished copybook had he not experienced an incredible slice of bad luck on the third of his four starts. In a Listed race at Deauville last month he quickened well to lead with one of the seven furlongs remaining before his saddle slipped and Ryan Moore was flung on to the turf with the winning post in sight. He bounced back to win a Listed contest over a mile at Haydock three weeks ago, just holding off Al Waab. The mile is probably a little too far for him just yet so the step back to seven furlongs is a genuine positive for him.

There are several interesting contenders apart from Havana Gold but most of them would need to make really significant improvement on their runs to date in order to lower the colours of Richard Hannon`s pretty impressive youngster.

The third and final Newmarket race of the day that has black type is the Jockey Club Rose Bowl, a Listed event over two miles that is complicated by the presence of not one, not two but three runners trained by Saeed Bin Suroor.

Two of those Godolphin horses dominate the betting, with Cavalryman and Lost In The Moment set to start as the race favourite and second favourite respectively. That should be enough to put off punters who will do well to remember that bookmakers are the only ones who have to bet on every race.
