The Ryder Cup reminds me a lot of pantomimes as you have all the cheering, booing and shouts of he’s behind you (well okay maybe not that last one). Despite the cries of ‘get in the hole’ this promises to be a really enjoyable three days of action with highs and lows and hopefully some winning bets along the way.

The US (I promise not to use the prefix of team here) are currently favourites which is a fair assesment bearing in mind they have the home advantage as the Medinah County Club plays host to the event. The Illinois crowd is sure to be passionate and vocal in their support and many have piled into the US already. However the 10/13 (You Win/32 Red) is a little too short. Other than home-field advantage there is little between these sides and Europe are over-priced at 7/4 (BetVictor/Stan James). Europe have won two of the last four held in America and four of the last five events. It is a price that is crying out too be taken. This is further confirmed when you look at the players taking part, four of the top five in the world rankings are all European. It is true that the American team goes a little deeper than the Europeans though the European players are a mix of in-form players and strong matchplayers. Omens are also on the side of the visitors as the last six non-English captains have gone on to lead Europe to success in the event.

Tiger Woods is 9/1 (general) to finish as top points scorer ahead of Rory McIlroy at 10/1 (general). I find it hard to oppose the two best players in the world both of whom will be hungry to show they are better than the other. Woods was the joint top-scorer (with Donald, Poulter and Stricker) in the Ryder Cup in 2010 securing three points and is a generous 5/1 (general) to finish as top scoring American. In terms of points scorers the standout bet for me is Luke Donald at 5/2 (bet365/ladbrokes) to be top English points scorer. This market removes the threat of McIlroy and of course Woods. Donald has won eight of his 11 matches in the Ryder Cup, picking up an average of 0.77 point per games. This ratio is not just the best among Englishman but also among the entire European team. The Englishman also has a 100% record in foursomes winning the six matches he has taken part in, including all four he has played alongside Garcia. It is for this reason that I also like Garcia at 2/1 (ladbrokes) to be the top Continental European points scorer. His opponents in this market are debutant Nicolas Colsaers, Francesco Molinari (who scored just 0.5 at the last Ryder Cup), Peter Hanson and Martin Kaymer. Garcia will be desperate to do well for fellow Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabel.

One last bet I would recommend is a little wager on the 5/4 Coral are going on Jim Furyk scoring under two points (note bet loses if his score is two points). The American has a dire Ryder Cup record with just two points from his last seven Ryder Cup singles matches and just four wins from 20 matches in foursomes and fourballs.

One final piece of advice is that the team leading before the singles has won each of the last four editions of the Ryder Cup consider this when betting in play. With over 100 markets available let us hope you too will be shouting ‘get in the hole’ with a winning bet, just make sure you are far away from my hearing range.
