Manchester United vs.Wolfsburg - Betting preview and odds

September 30, 2015 19:45pm - Old Trafford

Champions League - Group B

Manchester United will be attempting to get their Champions’ League group stage campaign back on track when they welcome German side Wolfsburg to Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

United looking for first points

Louis van Gaal`s team have yet to earn any points in Group B of Europe’s elite club competition having lost their opening game in Eindhoven by two goals to one.

The Red Devils will be boosted by the fact that they have not been beaten in any of their last six home games in all European competition. Their most recent success at Old Trafford came back in August when they defeated Club Brugge 3-1 in the play-off round.

The first time the teams met was back in September 2009 when the Red Devils came from behind to seal a 2-1 victory on home soil. The English club also won the return leg by three goals to one thanks to a Michael Owen hat-trick. Overall, United have a good record against German sides having won eight, drawn four and lost two of their fourteen historical encounters.

Wolfsburg yet to win on English soil

Wolfsburg already have three points on the board in Group B thanks to a 1-0 home win against CSKA Moscow. They have played in England on three previous occasions but have yet to win a game. On their last visit, they were comfortably beaten 4-1 by Everton in the early stages of the Europa League.

After a run of 15 games unbeaten in all competitions, Wolfsburg were finally defeated last week by a rampant Bayern Munich side in the Bundesliga. Despite taking the lead, Die Wölfe eventually lost 5-1 thanks to five second-half goals in less than nine minutes for Polish striker Robert Lewandowski.

Team news

Manchester United will be without Luke Shaw who suffered a double leg fracture following a strong tackle by PSV’s Hector Moreno in the first game week. Rojo is also a doubt after he withdrew from the league game against Sunderland with a hamstring issue. Andreas Pereira could be in line for a start after scoring on his senior debut in the League Cup game against Ipswich Town.

For the German side, Vieirinha and Koen Casteels are both still recovering from injuries and are doubtful for this clash.

Betting odds and tips

With Wolfsburg’s poor record on English soil and United’s recent good form, a home win should be expected for this game. You can get a decent 9/10 for a Manchester United triumph at Betfred.

Anthony Martial has kicked off his United career in style and has provided the goals that were desperately lacking before his arrival. He can be backed at 7/5 to score anytime with Betfair.

Former Arsenal striker Niklas Bendtner has scored eight times when coming off the bench for the German club and can be backed at 13/5 to find the net anytime on Wednesday, also with Betfair.
