Premier League preview and odds: Burnley vs Watford

September 25 , 2016 16:00pm - Turf Moor

Premier League

Newly-promoted Burnley can pull four points clear of the drop zone with a win at home to Watford on Monday night. Meanwhile, their opponents could break into the top eight with victory at Turf Moor.

Burnley face survival challenge

Thanks to a shock win over Liverpool earlier in the season and a draw against Hull City in their last home game, Burnley have managed to keep their heads above the relegation waters so far. However, another win would give them some extra breathing space over their rivals in the battle for survival.

They come into this match on the back on 3-0 defeat at home to defending champions Leicester City in which they managed just two shots on target and were lucky not to have conceded more. With just three goals scored all season, the Clarets are bottom of the Premier League scoring charts. On the flip side, their defensive record is the best in the bottom half of the table.

Opponents Watford have made a decent start to their second season back in the top flight, having picked up seven points from their first five games. On Monday night they will look to secure their third-straight Premier League win after bagging impressive wins at West Ham United and at home to Manchester United home last time out.

New boss Walter Mazzarri seems to be finding his feet in the Premier League league and has guided his team to 11th place in the table. A win on Monday could lift them above Chelsea in to eighth place or even higher if they can overtake Crystal Palace on goal difference.

The Hornets will be full of confidence after putting Manchester United to the sword last weekend. Their 3-5-2 formation proved effective in that game and a similar set-up can be expected on Monday.

Team news

Ashley Barnes is unavailable for the home side who otherwise have a full strength squad to choose from.

Meanwhile, the visitors are still managing a substantial injury list that includes Jerome Sinclair Brice Dja Djedje, Jose Holebas, Younes Kaboul, Stefano Okaka and Darly Janmaat.

Betting odds and tips

Burnley will keep this tight but Watford have proved in recent games that they have to key to unlock defences. Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo are always a threat and Etienne Capoue has started the season brightly with four goals already in the bag.

Watford should have the edge tactically and that should be enough to see them grab all three points.
