Pre-season friendly preview and odds: Manchester City vs Borussia Dortmund

July 28, 2016 13:30am - Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre

International Champions Cup

Following the cancellation of their proposed derby game in Beijing, Manchester City will play what will be only their second pre-season game of the summer when they take on German side Borussia Dortmund in Shenzhen on Thursday.

Will a lack of action cost City in Dortmund clash?

With the first weekend of the Premier League just over two weeks away, Manchester City have played just one pre-season friendly - a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich eight days ago. They were due to face arch rivals Manchester United in Beijing three days ago but game was cancelled after heavy rain made the surface unplayable.

In stark contrast, Borussia Dortmund will come into this game having played five pre-season matches including a 4-1 win over Manchester United just a week ago. As a result, this match could be a tough test for Pep Guardiola’s men who faces a race against time to get his players in shape for the fast-approaching season opener at home to Sunderland.

The Citizens battled hard against Bayern Munich last week with a makeshift team comprising of many academy players. With several players still lacking in fitness following their Euro 2016 comedowns, the Spanish Coach may decide to field a similar line up.

Thomas Tuchel was unsurprisingly pleased with his sides display against Jose Mourinho`s men last week and will be looking to complete a back-to-back double against Manchester teams.

Team news

Kevin De Bruyne will not feature as he continues his recuperation, while Sergio Aguero, Joe Hart, Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Otamendi are not expected to feature from the start, having only joined up with the team last week.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will not be available for Tomas Tuchel, having flown back Germany for the birth of his child. Meanwhile, indications are that Roman Burki could replace Roman Weidenfeller in goal.

Betting odds and tips

Dortmund are way ahead of City on term of match preparation and that showed last week when they demolished a Manchester United team that had only played one game all summer.

The Germans will also be able to call upon a near to full strength line up, while their opponents will once again have to rely on some academy player to make up the numbers.
