Jacks Revenge is the Cambridgeshire value

The Cambridgeshire, the first leg of the autumn double, gets top billing on a great day of horse racing at Newmarket and it would have to be one of the year`s best betting races.

Thirty-five runners have made the Cambridgeshire cut and the cavalry charge is one that punters either love or hate. Hate is probably the overriding emotion but, in the interests of having a bet in the race, a few trends and an eye-catching jockey booking point to Jack`s Revenge at around 25-1.

Based on the results of the last 10 Cambridgeshires, one is looking for an improving, lightly weighted runner whose record includes a win over 10 furlongs because, while the Newmarket event takes place over nine furlongs, the Rowley Mile Course has a stiff finish that finds out non stayers.

Jack`s Revenge is still on the upgrade despite having made 10 racecourse appearances, with two firsts, three seconds and one third in his six starts this year. Held up towards the rear in a mile handicap at Goodwood two months ago, he made headway two furlongs out and was weaving his way though the field before hitting a brick wall. He found a gap with less than half a furlong remaining and he was closing quickly at the finish but he missed out by two necks.

George Baker has kept Jack`s Revenge under wraps since then and that means he has got into the Cambridgeshire field with the equal lowest weight of eight stone and eight pounds. The Whitsbury-based trainer must think that the four-year-old son of Footstepsinthesand has a chance because he has gone to the trouble of engaging top French jockey Gerald Mosse.

At 25-1, Jack`s Revenge is well worth an each-way punt. He will appreciate being covered up and he is only the odds that he is because Baker`s stable is unfashionable.

The Cambridgeshire may be the headline act but it is not a Group race, unlike the three races that precede it on the Newmarket card, including a couple of Group One contests.

The Royal Lodge Stakes, a Group Two event over a mile for juvenile colts and geldings, kicks off the day`s horse racing and it is hard to go past Fantastic Moon, the unbeaten son of Dalakhani from Jeremy Noseda`s yard,

Fantastic Moon`s two victories over seven furlongs have earned him a rating similar to that of his more experienced Royal Lodge Stakes rivals and there is better to come from him as he gets the hang of racing for the big bucks.

Noseda`s two-year-olds are flying and Fantastic Moon is bred to relish the step up in distance. He is a worthy favourite.

The Cheveley Park Stakes, a Group One heat over six furlongs for juvenile fillies, features many exciting prospects, with bookmakers liking the chances of Maureen and Rosdhu Queen most of all. Maureen is set to start as the favourite but Rosdhu Queen has the better form on a line through one of the outsiders in the field, Mick Channon`s Sandreamer.

Maureen defeated Sandreamer by two and a quarter lengths but Rosdhu Queen beat the same filly by four lengths. So, at the forecast odds, side with the William Haggas-trained daughter of Invincible Spirit as she bids to win her fourth race.

The Sun Chariot Stakes, a Group One contest over a mile for non-juvenile fillies and mares, is a race to which Sir Henry Cecil holds the key with two of the top three favourites.

Chachamaidee is a likeable mare but Beauty Parlour has a real touch of class and the Deep Impact filly, winner of this year`s French 1,000 Guineas, is the one to beat.
