WORLD CUP SECOND ROUND MATCHES

Brazil v Chile, Saturday June 28th, 17:00, BBC 1

The Second Round of the World Cup gets underway Saturday afternoon with possibly the pick of the last 16 games, a battle between South American rivals Brazil and Chile.

BET365 have Brazil as the 4/7 favourites for the game as they look to continue their dominance of recent meetings between the pair which has seen them go unbeaten in the last ten, winning nine of these. The Samba Stars also knocked out Chile in the 2010 World Cup with a comfortable 3-0 victory. I tend not to read too much into previous meetings as a form guide when these games are from a number of years ago. I think you can gain much more from the two meetings these sides had in 2013. In November 2013 Brazil won the battle 2-1 while when these sides met in March the game ended drawn 2-2. I think this shows that the gaps between these sides is not huge. Performances in qualification also suggest that there is little to choose between the duo. Brazil topped Group A with seven points with a comfortable victory over Cameroon covering for indifferent performances against Croatia and Mexico. Chile saw off Spain and Australia before being the better side for large spells against the Netherlands before losing 2-0.

I think it has to be worth an interest on Chile to run Brazil close again and you can get 21/4 Chile come out as victors in 90 minutes or 10/3 the game ends in a draw. I think a better way to play this is Chile on the Asian Handicap with a 1.0 start. This means if Chile win or the game ends drawn your bet wins while a one goal loss will see your stake will be refunded.

Another bet to consider is David Luiz and Thiago Silva to score in this game. The former is 28/1 to net first and the latter 22/1 with Silva 8/1 to score anytime and the Chelsea man 10/1. These are cracking bets as Chile have looked weak from set-pieces with Cahill causing them problems in their opener and Leroy Fer netting for the Dutch with his head.

RECOMMENDATION: Chile +1.0 on the Asian Handicap v Brazil, 39/40 (bet365)
David Luiz to score v Chile, first (28/1), anytime 10/1 (bet365)
Thiago Silva to score v Chile, first 22/1, anytime 8/1 (bet365)

Colombia v Uruguay, Saturday June 28th, 21:00, ITV1.

Colombia are one of the few teams to have won all three group games and all though you could argue the opposition was weak you have to be impressed by the way they qualified. The South Americans netted nine goals and conceded two in seeing off Japan, Greece and the Ivory Coast. I am shocked then to see Colombia available at evens with bet365 to win the game in 90 minutes when they are in such good form (unbeaten) in ten and against a Uruguay side who will be without their best player in Luis Suarez.

True Uruguay won the last meeting between these sides but that was at Uruguay and it was a game they need to win more than Colombia. Of more relevance to me is the game between these sides in September 2012 when Colombia came out on top 4-0.

In addition go a step further and take the 7/2 on Colombia to reach the last four of the World Cup as they have the capability of seeing off Brazil or Chile in the last eight.

A final bet to consider from this game is James Rodriguez to score at anytime as he has done in all three games in this tournament so far and he is 11/5 to find the net in this one.

RECOMMENDATION: Colombia to beat Uruguay, evens (bet365)
Colombia to reach the semi finals, 7/2 (BET365)
James Rodriguez to net at anytime v Uruguay, 11/5 (BET365)
