WORLD CUP OUTRIGHTS

Brazil are the 3/1 favourites with bet365 as the World Cup enters the knockout stages ON Saturday afternoon with 16 teams still dreaming of lifting the famous trophy. Amng those headed home early are defending champions Spain, Euro 2012 finalists Italy and England.

The Samba Boys are favourites because they are at home that being said I would not be wanting to be on them at those prices. They face a difficult route to the final as first they must get through impressive Chile, then one of Colombia and Uruguay before a potential last four battle with either France or Germany. It is best then to stay clear of them and for me all the sides in the top half of the draw should be avoided. Germany and France are on collision course for a last eight meeting so 4/1 the Germans and 8/1 the French offers no appeal at all. Other sides in this section are Colombia at 18s, Chile at 30s, Uruguay at 40s with Nigeria at 200s and Algeria at 225/1 the outsiders for the whole tournament.

The value then lies in the section half which has Argentina and the Netherlands and then a number of teams who were not expected to make it through this far. At this stage Argentina are 4/1 to win the tournament with bet365 and this has to be worth an interest. A last 16 tie with Switzerland should not cause them too many concerns before Belgium and the United States await in the last eight and likely the Netherlands in the last four. It is for this reason that I would also recommend getting on the Dutch at 8/1. The counter attacking of Robben and the finishing of van Persie makes them very difficult opponents.

If you think Argentina and the Netherlands can be opposed then you might want to look at some each-way value on the other teams in this section with Belgium 20/1 for the trophy, Mexico 30/1, Costa Rica 50s and Greece, Switzerland and the USA all 80s.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Argentina to win the World Cup, E/W, 4/1 (bet365)
Netherlands to win the World Cup, E/W, 8/1 (bet365)

TOP GOALSCORER MARKETS

In terms of topscorer market it is a three way tie at the top with Lionel Messi, Neymar and Thomas Muller all on four goals. Bookmakers make Messi and Neymar the 5/2 joint favourites although of the two it is Messi I would rather be with. The Argentina frontman has a game against a Swiss side that shipped five against France in the last 16 while Neymar has diffiult looking games ahead. Muller can not be discounted as he has a last 16 game with Algeria where he may bag a couple. I prefer though to look at a bigger each-way bet and I like the look of James Rodriguez at 33/1. The Colombian has three already in this tournament and will fancy his chances against a Uruguay backline that shipped three to Costa Rica.

BET365 also still have markets on the top goalscorer for each team remaining in the last 16. One of the bets I like here is top Belgian scorer where Divock Origi is currently tied on one goal with three other players. He is the 10/3 second favourite and this looks generous on a player expected to start up front in the knockout stages and be handed most of the chances.

RECOMMENDATIONS: James Rodriguez top tournament scorer, EW, 33/1 (bet365)
Divock Origi top Belgian scorer, 10/3

GOLDEN BALL

We spoke before about the nice route the Netherlands and Argentina have in getting to the final and another way to play this is in the player of the tournament market. Lionel Messi is a worthy favourite though Arjen Robben at 6/1 is worth an interest on a player who has had a ruge role in getting the Dutch this far.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Arjen Robben to win the Golden Ball, 6/1 (bet365)
