Liverpool vs. Wigan Athletic Preview

Premier League

Liverpool got back to winning ways in the Premier League with a fantastic 1-3 derby win over Everton at Goodison Park – but the value of that result will disappear should the Reds fail to follow up against rock bottom Wigan Athletic at Anfield.

Consistency, or rather the lack of it, has been the bane of Liverpool’s season so far but boss Kenny Dalglish will be pleased enough that potential Champions League qualification is still in sight having bagged a priceless piece of silverware via the Carling Cup a fortnight ago.

It was perhaps inevitable that Liverpool fell flat at Sunderland next time out on the back of such a thrilling encounter with Cardiff City at Wembley, but their response against Everton nevertheless signalled intent to finish the domestic campaign as strongly as possible.

Overall, it looks as if Liverpool’s task of bridging a seven point gap to fourth placed Arsenal is too stiff – but they should start making in-roads when Wigan come to town.

Roberto Martinez’s side are in deep trouble and there is little suggest that they can add to their scant 22 point haul at Anfield.

The Latics pitiful defence has undoubtedly been the main reason for their failure and Liverpool will be confident of further breaching their leaky rear guard.

56 goals have already been conceded by Athletic this season and a sudden, vast improvement will have to be made if they are to beat the drop.

The big positive for Wigan is the fact that they are only one point away from safety but that gap could extend with any form of result here looking highly unlikely.

Liverpool have drawn eight games at home this campaign and have failed to take care of sides well below them in the table.

But Dalglish finally appears to have injected a sense of positivity into his team and now they look more than capable of finishing teams off in front of their own supporters.

Wigan are likely to shape up as the softest opposition to have visited Anfield this term and the Reds can mark their authority upon this fixture in good style.

Captain Steven Gerrard is continuing to find his best form and the England star’s performances always provide a good indication as to how the team is performing as a whole.

Striker Luis Suarez has hardly been prolific since his arrival from Ajax but the controversial Uruguayan should be able to boost his slim goal tally here and spearhead a two or three goal success.

A handicap result should probably be backed considering how short Liverpool are in the match betting, but in truth the 3/10 is probably a fair reflection of the likely outcome.

A few other bets also make appeal, notably the ‘win both halves’ market which always offers a decent price even for strong favourites.

The aforementioned Suarez looks the most ready candidate to mark the score sheet and it may pay to chance him on netting a brace at a decent price.
