Npower League One Preview

The final round of fixtures in the 2011/2012 Npower League One season all take place on Saturday April 28 and there is a real tussle set to ensue for the second automatic promotion berth between bitter Sheffield enemies United and Wednesday.

Charlton Athletic have already won the division and will return to the Npower Championship next season after a three year absence.

But second place is still wide open and it is anyone’s guess as to which side of the Steel City will prevail.

It is Danny Wilson’s Sheffield United who are in the driving seat prior to kick off; the Blades hold a one point advantage over Dave Jones’ Sheffield Wednesday in third.

But the Owls, who have a 3pm kick off away at Brentford, can put the pressure on United who must wait until 5.20pm to face Stevenage at Bramall Lane.

Both clubs are fancied to claim three points, a scenario which would see United promoted and Wednesday stuck in the play-offs.

Nevertheless, opinions may change on United’s chances at home to Stevenage should they find themselves temporarily behind at tea-time – and the heat will certainly be on if such an instance occurs.

Wednesday undoubtedly have the tougher game however even though Brentford have nothing to play for and it may pay to back United to gain promotion rather than betting on both matches individually.

Stevenage will be hoping to cling onto the final play-off place as they sit precariously in sixth – and it is Notts County who will be out to force their way into the reckoning.

County face a tricky trip to Wycombe Wanderers, who need to win to stand any chance of beating the drop.

The visitors should be able to confirm their superiority and subsequently back Stevenage into a corner, much like Wednesday will be out to do to United.

And at around 13/8, the Magpies are a decent price to achieve just that considering that they are 14 places above Wycombe in the table.

Huddersfield Town and the MK Dons will want to find some form ahead of the end of season play-offs and they face away trips to Walsall and Rochdale respectively.

The Dons performed with great credit to beat Sheffield United last time out and can follow up at Spotland at a shade of odds against.

Town broke a miserable run of three consecutive defeats when beating Yorkshire rivals Scunthorpe United at the Galpharm in the penultimate game of the campaign but may have trouble doubling up against Walsall who require a point to absolutely safe.

The hosts are likely to be pressing at the Bescott Stadium and it is questionable how seriously the Terriers will take matters – making Walsall a potentially shrewd bet at 6/4.

Champions Charlton will look to round their fine campaign off in style away at Preston and the Addicks should complete their League One mission professionally and successfully.

Athletic have not been odds against on many occasions this season and Chris Powell’s men are worth siding with one last time before they make the step up to England’s second tier.
