The hand movements is what is called Kuji-in. They are used in meditation to trigger things in the mind. Basically through prior self hypnosis, the intricate hand positions that include certain pressure points and reciting of the names of the hand position is what triggers it. It is an energy channelling excercise. It is a Mikkyo tradition. Mikkyo is a form of Esoteric Buddism or Shinto. Mikkyo means secret teachings. It was a common belief that Mikkyo was Black magic or witch craft. Which it isn't. It is a nature based "religion" and I use that term loosely. To compare it with more common things, it would be similiar to North American spiritual practices, Pagan practices. It is basically how things in nature work and how it relates to everything around it. I am not an expert in it that is for sure. But the things I have seen, I am a believer for sure! lol
There is very few modern people who can actually grasp the concept of Mikkyo. So chances are, unless your friend has been taught by a person studying Mikkyo for a LONG time, and I am talking over 18 years... It is most likely that your friend is just knotting up his fingers and chanting. I have been studying Kuji-in or Kuji-Kiri as it's also known by for 4 years, daily and I can just barely grasp " SHA" Healing of yourself and others and "KAI" premonition of danger. It is not easy and it has just started to come to me now.

If anyone wants Ninjutsu information, go to these links
www.winjutsu.com www.winjutsu.com
www.kutaki.org www.kutaki.org
Or do a search on these key words
Bujinkan, Genbukan, Jinenkan
These are the mainstream organizations. There is bound to be one of these schools near you. I am not a member of these ORG's but they are the most trustworthy. They have provable direct lineage from Takamatsu Sensei. The last true Ninja. There are some excellent independant styles out there. But there is many more crappy ones. You really have dig to find good independants. That is what I did. My teacher is excellent. And he is not teaching publicly. Many know the arts, but won't teach it or are very choosy as to who is taught.

Do any of you know of a place where I could find like a photo-
reference to "moves" of ninjitsu and an explanation as to how
you perform them?

STAY AWAY FROM ASHIDA KIM!!! He is a complete fraud. And it has been proven thousands of times.
Don't go around saying that I directed you his way. I ALWAYS tell people right off the bat to stay away from him. I have seen a few of his videos and he is a joke. I am not kidding. Don't even think that I told you to train with him. Just read about him on www.bullshido.com www.bullshido.com
www.e-budo.com www.e-budo.com
www.sherdog.com www.sherdog.com
Do a search man. You will find out how much of a complete nutcase he is. On top of the fraud and lies, etc. He is a coward.
