So now not only must the toll workers jobs be protected at all costs but at the same timeits also a bad job that you wouldnt want at all. Maybe we should look to get technology in so the poor dears dont need to work there anymore.

Well I would rather sit in a traffic queue on the M25 than have to use the old roads through London like the old 406 therefore please be patient and stop knocking the staff at Darford they do their best to keep things moving. I would not want their job so all you hard asses, leave them alone.

well, computers or no computers, the tolls are a JOKE. why should we sit in traffic for hours on end just to pay for a gate opening and shutting? it would be a different story if we were traveling into another contry e.g wales (m4 toll) but we are not. we pay our taxes so DO AWAY WITH THEM!

the people bleating on about the jobs of the toll staff should remember that they are making these comments using a computer. Computers have probably cost more people their jobs than any other piece of technology. You can't have it both ways you know!

I agree. As technology advances so people's jobs change, and sadly some disappear. I wonder if those posters defending the toll operators jobs would insist on a return to coals fires in the home to save the jobs of chimney sweeps and coal merchants?

I have to butt in here but who gives a damn about their jobs, their collecting toll money not curing Cancer! Technology changes - People need to be able to travel without these ridiculous traffic jams caused by the government.

what would happen after all the programming has been done and all the systems are up and working? only need say maybe 4 people to operate from a remote location? errrm let me think..........? the staff who work there now will be out of a job! your really really really really clever!

*  message by guest at 13/01/2010 14:02:47

hard nut? i bet that took ages to come up with!! well lets see.......instead of doing loads of people out of jobs you could make the booths into an automated system run by PLC Devices, train the staff to do the programming on them, mainly to make sure they running correctly, the PLC Devices run on commands that are pre ordained, therefore they have set things to do depending on what it's presented with, so people using the tolls everyday are issued with a tag (not unlike the dart tag we are currently using) which is programmed to take money whenever it goes through. the booths get eradicated, as the readers are above the road like the electronic signs. so that eases congestion yet keeps with the governments idea of wanting people to pay for the privelidge of going through a tunnel/over a bridge. yet for people that havent got a tag they go into a seperate lane where they pay. simple ideas without kicking people out of jobs. wow that was so hard wasn't it!! thats just one idea, and i have actually designed a system to run it. not hard.

halve the staff? wow what a fantastic idea.....so half of the people all of a sudden lose their jobs?! well done for such an idiotic suggestion, you must be so proud!! did you come up with that all by yourself? round of applause!!!
