Developed by Endemol Gaming in 2008, “Alien Supernova” is a fixed odds game, combining aspects of traditional slots with those of spinning wheel arcade games. The game features outer space symbols, combined with a novel version of the 12-payline format plus three interactive bonus rounds for additional opportunities to win big.

Against the backdrop of the Earth’s horizon and stars, there are three concentric circles called “Rings,” which are formed by slot symbols. The inner Ring is made up of 12 different symbols, the middle Ring consists of 24 random symbols and the outer one has 36 symbols. Controls are simple, consisting only of a “Stake Per Spin” selector in the lower left corner of the screen and a “Spin” button with “Autoplay” option at the lower right.

A game of Alien Supernova begins by selecting a stake to wager from £1 to £10 by clicking on the up/down arrows flanking the “Stake Per Spin” indicator. Some casinos have maximum values as high as £100. Next, clicking on Spin will set the circles of symbols in motion, rotating clockwise or counterclockwise, until each of them comes to rest. At that point, the Supernova will flash brightly in the very centre of the screen, emitting rays of light that connect winning symbols.

Payouts are made for matching 2 or 3 of the same symbols on a win line (from the inner ring to the outer) or matching 2 or 3 of the same coloured symbols on a win line. Only the highest payout is made per win line, meaning that matching symbols on a win line always supersede matching colours. Clicking on the “Paytable” button on the top of the screen allows viewing of the specific payouts for the game, which are calculated on the full stake, not a prorated value per payline.

The payouts for matching 2 or 3 symbols on a win line ranges from 0.1X to 1000X. The symbols are also grouped in colours—Yellow, Blue, Green and Red—worth from 0.1X to 0.25X for winning combinations. A summary of the most valuable wins appears in two columns flanking the game display, too. Following each Spin, the individual winning lines are highlighted, along with their payouts, while the losing symbols disappear. The total amount won displays over the Supernova.

When the Autoplay button is pressed, a pop-up counter appears and up/down arrows can be used to set the number of automated spins between 1 and 25. Clink on “Start Auto” to initiate play; click on “Stop” to halt Autoplay and return to “Regular” spins mode. Autoplay will stop whenever all indicated spins have been made or a Bonus Feature is won, whichever comes first.

The Bonus Features on Alien Supernova are activated any time three Tentacle Fighters, Robo Fighters or Tentacle Spy ships appear on a win line. The “Alien Autopsy” bonus is a gamble option to collect the stake won or wager it for a bonus amount. If the latter is chosen, three Aliens heads appear and the player must select one of them to win double the current win, receive even money or else lose the current win. The “Alien Abduction” bonus offers six Cows moving around a field in a circle. The player must “pick” one of them by clicking on it, thus revealing a cash prize.

The most lucrative of the three bonuses is “Alien Attack.” Spaceships begin flying out of the darkness of space toward the player, who uses a targeting device to shoot down seven of them, each revealing a cash award.
