The fictional superhero known as “Batman” was developed by writer Bill Finger and artist Bill Kane in 1939. He has since become a cultural icon as one of the main characters of the DC Comics line-up, active in the Justice League and the star of television and movie series, the most recent being Warner Brothers’ big-screen production called “The Dark Knight.”

The “Batman” slot game produced by Cryptologic is based upon the graphic style of DC Comics. Featuring a 5-reel, 50-payline format with four positions per reel, this is one of the first online slots to incorporate the Bonus Bet option, which allows the player to have an extra advantage in the game in return for paying an additional ten credits per spin.

The basic symbols on the Batman slots are gadgets and weapons popularized by the comic book series, such as the Batarang, Batmobile, Batcycle and Batsignal. These pay line multipliers from 4X to 150X whenever three or more matching symbols appear on an active payline from left to right. The Commissioner Gordon symbol is worth 2X, 20X, 40X or 200X when 2, 3, 4 or 5 of them appear in a row, and the Joker symbol pays 4X, 50X, 100X or 2000X for such alignments.

Batman himself is the wild symbol for this game, substituting for any symbol except the Bonus Scatter. Batman appears only on reels two, three and four, but as a “stacked” wild capable of filling all four positions on a reel. When Batman is part of a winning combination, he rises up out of the frame; an ominous chord sounds and bats fly out while the dark sky behind him is lit by flashes of lightening.

The Scatter Bonus symbol is the Batman Logo with the word Scatter below it. It is worth a total wager multiplier of 2X, 4X, 15X or 100X when 2, 3, 4 or 5 such symbols appear from left to right on the reels. In normal play, no other bonus is awarded. However, if the “Bonus Bet” is activated, the Logo shows the word “Bonus” instead of “Scatter” and the scatter prize values are multiplied by 50X. An extra Batman Wild symbol is randomly added to the middle reels, too.

Catching three or more Logo Bonuses on the reels from left to right will trigger the Descent into Madness feature. In this mode, a second screen appears with a prison scene, inviting the player to throw Batarangs at escaping inmates. Each prisoner hit reveals a cash prize. Once the inmates have been defeated, the player must trap the Joker, which is worth a total wager multiplier of 100X.

One other bonus feature is available in both the normal play and Bonus Bet modes. It is called the “Batman Re-Spins Feature” and it is activated when Commissioner Gordon appears on the first reel and the Batsignal on the fifth reel, or vice versa. Either combination results in one of the reels two, three or four expanding as a locked wild. Then, the other reels are set in motion for three free spins with all wins double. Re-triggering of the free spins is also possible.

The control panel for Batman slots is set directly below the reels. In the middle below the third reel are up/down toggles for setting the number of paylines from 1 to 50 and the amount wagered per line from €0.01 to €20.00, thus making the maximum wager €1,000. There is an Autoplay option on the left side of the control panel for selecting from 1 to 999 automated spins, and the Bonus Bet on/off button is on the right.
