Many fans of online casino games will recognise “Blockbusters” as the name of a popular TV quiz show. It originally appeared on U.S. televisions in the early 1980s and quickly established a niche in the U.K., running for eleven seasons on ITV from 1983 through 1994.

When British host Bob Holness passed away in January 2012 at the age of 83, Challenge TV announced plans to revive the show, aiming at an adult viewing audience. The earlier programme had a cult following among teenagers and gave rise to the cheeky phrase, “Can I have a P please Bob?”

The slot game version of “Blockbusters” found on Bet365, BetVictor and other major online casinos was developed by Electracade. The game board resembles the one with a honey-comb pattern used on the TV trivia show, but the action is greatly simplified, featuring a 5-reel, 15-payline format with expanding wilds and a special “Gold Run” bonus game.

The basic symbols that appear on the Blockbuster reels are the standard cards, Tens through Aces. They award line bet multipliers ranging from 1X to 30X for catching three or more matches on an active payline. The white-lettered BB symbol is worth from 20X to 55X for three or more in a row, while the blue-lettered BB symbol is valued at 25X to 100X for winning alignments.

The Alphabet symbol wins 30X, 75X or 150X whenever 3, 4 or 5 matches appear on an active line from left to right. And the Blockbusters Logo scores payouts of 60X, 100X or 250X for winning combinations. The Wild symbol appears only on reels two, three and four, where it substitutes for any other symbol except the Gold Run scatter. When a Wild is part of a win, it triggers the “Expanding Wild Feature,” filling all three positions on the reel with Wilds.

Catching three or more Gold Run scatters anywhere on the reels activates the Gold Run Bonus. The game board will change to a random mix of letters on green backgrounds, with a Goal position adjacent to the top of the fifth reel. The player must begin clicking on reel position, starting with the first reel, in an attempt to clear a path across the board to the Goal. Each reel position is worth a cash prize, so the more positions that are clicked, the greater the cash reward.

The Gold Run Bonus ends when the player reaches the Goal or clicks on a game ending “Exit Bonus” position. Cash prizes are based upon the Total Stake at the time the bonus is triggered. If the Goal is achieved, the total of all cash prizes collected is doubled.

To begin the game, the player must select an amount to wager per line. This can be accomplished by using the up/down indicators next to the “Bet/Line” indicator at the lower left corner of the display. Available values run from a minimum of €0.01 to a limit of €25.00. Similarly, the number of lines to be played can be set by using the up/down indicators next to the “Line” indicator beneath the first reel. Alternatively, clicking on the hexagonal line number identifiers that flank the first and fifth reels will also set the number of lines to be played.

There is no “Bet Max” button on Blockbusters, but wagering the full €25 per line on all 15 lines yields a maximum stake of €375. Whatever amount is wagered will show in the “Stake” window below the second reel. There is a “Total Paid” window under reel four. Indicators for Stake and Paid also appear beneath the “Balance” counter at the top right of the screen.

Autoplay can be activated by clicking on the corresponding button below the fifth reel. There are options for 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 spins. The same button is used to stop the Autoplay function.
