There is a certain segment of the slot-playing public that longs for days when the games were simple and straight-forward: three reels, one payline and big wins. Fans of retro should be quite happy, then, that software supplier Playtech still offers up the classics, as exemplified by the resilient video slot called “Funky Monkey.”

Look for no bells and whistles here. There are no bonus games, no scatters, no wilds and no free spins. Funky Monkey offers just one way to win, by matching three symbols on a single center payline. Don’t look for high-tech audio or animation, either. From the bongo-holding chimp in sunglasses on the main display to the symbols on the reels and the minimal controls, everything about Funky Money says “spin to win” and that’s all.

Available coin denominations start at €0.01 per line and run as high as €5.00. The value can be adjusted using the +/- toggles next to the bet indicator at the lower left of the screen. It’s possible to wager up to three credits on the single payline. The amount can be adjusted by using the “Bet One” button on the control panel below the reels. Clicking on “Bet Max” will cause a maximum wager of 3 credits on the payline, but it does not change the denomination of each credit. The total wager limit is €15 per spin.

The Funky Monkey symbols are purely old school, too. There are basic symbols for 1Bar, 2Bar and 3Bar. Catching three of them at random on the payline will bay 10 times the wager up to a maximum of 30 credits. If the bars all match up, they pay 20X, 40X or 60X, respectively.

Higher paying symbols are the Bananas, Sunglasses, Grass Huts, Palm Trees and Bongo Drums. Aligning three of the same symbol on the payline awards 80X, 100X, 200X, 400X or 800X, respectively. On each reel, these symbols are separated by blanks, making winning combinations of three symbols on the single payline infrequent, just like in “the old days.”

At the top right side of the display window is the game’s Paytable. Payouts are displayed in a grid of three columns for the bet amounts and eight rows for the symbols that appear. Betting two credits on the payline will double the amounts paid out, and wagering three credits will triple them. But there is one exception. At maximum bet, a winning combination of three Bongo Drums on the payline is worth 2,500 credits, not the expected 2400. This makes the odds of winning slightly better at the “Bet Max” limit, no matter what denomination is selected for the bets, and the highest prize is €12,500 if €5 per spin is wagered at Bet Max.

For those like using Autoplay to allow the game to run by itself, Funky Money has a number of special features. For example, the toggle to access Autoplay is hidden in the pull-down “Tools” menu at the very top right corner of the screen. Clicking on it brings up the Autoplay control panel in the lower right corner. Eve though the +/- toggles flanking the spins indicator can be used to set the number of auto spins desired, it is possible to type the number directly into the counter for up to 9,999 spins maximum.

Other Autoplay options can be revealed by clicking the expanded menu arrows on the left edge of the Autoplay control panel. It’s possible to set “stop loss” and “overall win” limits, and there are +/- toggles for adjusting the length of the delay between spins, too.

Also available on the “Tools” pull-down menu are various “Options” such as “Game Settings,” “Audio Settings” and “General Settings.” This is where the player can disable the game sounds, background sounds or dealer voices. It is also possible to adjust the game speed for normal play or fast play.
