It’s quite common to refer to the “luck of the Irish.” From the Blarney Stone and shamrocks to tales of St. Patrick’s miracles, Ireland is seen as an enchanted land of natural blessings and good fortune. Perhaps no stories fuel the imagination as much as those of “leprechauns,” the so-called “little people” or faeries that secretly inhabit the Emerald Isle, making shoes, hiding pots of gold and using magic to grant wishes.

It comes as no surprise, then, that Net Entertainment chose “Leprechaun’s Luck” as the theme for a 5-reel, 20-payline slot game launched just before St. Patrick’s Day in 2011. In addition to three special bonuses, it comes with a Progressive Jackpot that can be won in either of two ways, plus some of the most delightful graphics currently available online.

The brief introduction to Leprechaun’s Luck describes the various game features before proceeding to the reels window. Surrounding the reels is a pastoral scene of rolling green hills, fields of flowers and colourful mushrooms, a pot full of gold on the right, and purple mountains in the distance with blue skies overhead. Birds can be heard singing, accompanied by the sounds of water, insects and the wind—a simply idyllic Irish day.

The 20 paylines of Leprechaun’s Luck are fixed and always in play. To get started, the player need only select the total stake to be wagered, by using the +/- toggles below the third reel next to the “Change Stake” indicator. Available stakes range from €1.00 to €200.00, and the line bets are always 1/20 of the total.

The basic reel symbols on Leprechaun’s Luck are the standard cards, Tens through Aces. They pay line multipliers from 4X to 100X whenever three or more are matched on an active payline. Higher awards are paid for catching three or more Mushrooms, Glasses of Stout or Harps, from 30X to 1500X. The Leprechaun’s Luck Logo is wild and substitutes for all of the above symbols. Catching 3, 4 or 5 Logos in a row from left to right on a payline pays 100X, 1000X or 10000X, respectively.

Another symbol is the Wishing Well, which appears only on the middle reel. If it appears in any position on that reel, the Wishing Well Bonus round begins, with the entire third reel turning into the well shaft. A bucket drops down through the shaft, collecting cash prizes along the way. It may stop at any time, awarding the accumulated total. However, if it reaches the pile of gold at the bottom of the well, then the Progressive Jackpot is won.

Another bonus can be activated by catching the three Free Spins Leprechauns that appear only reels 2, 4 and 5. When all three appear at the same time, the one on the fourth reel will jump down out of the frame, puff away on his pipe and award free games with each cloud of smoke that arises. The number of free spins to be won is random, from 3 to 9 to 20 or more.

As soon as the number of free games has been determined, the Leprechaun will skip around the reels awarding “Locked Wild” symbols randomly, to remain in place throughout the Free Spins Bonus. During the free spins, an enhanced reel set is used, which means there should be more wins on average than normal. However, the bonus symbols have been removed, so it is not possible to trigger the bonus rounds or gain additional free spins.

The third special feature on Leprechaun’s Luck is the “Rainbow of Wealth Bonus.” It is initiated by catching all three of the Pot of Gold scatter symbols that appear only on reels 1, 3 and 5. As soon as they are displayed, the scene will shift to a rainbow, where the Leprechaun spins a rainbow-coloured wheel bearing the number 1 through 6. When the wheel stops, a pointer will indicate the colour of the rainbow trail to follow and the number will decide how many spaces to move. The object is to collect as many multipliers as possible while avoiding landing on a “Collect” position, which ends the bonus. Reaching the very end of the rainbow trail awards the Progressive Jackpot.

Two other options that add to the fun of playing Leprechaun’s Luck are the “Auto Plays” and “Change Color” buttons beneath the reels. The former allows up to 25 automated spins to be activated, while the latter enables different coloured backgrounds for the reels, including white, purple, green and black.
