Greek mythology is rich with characters and events that make for great casino games. Certainly WagerWorks-IGT had this in mind when they selected “Medusa” as the theme for this entrancing 5-reel, 25-payline slot. It is based on the story of the infamous “gorgon,” a hideous female creature with poisonous snakes growing out of her scalp instead of hair who turn anyone to stone just by looking at them.

The Medusa slot reels appear housed within a temple, surrounded by ruins on a hillside with dark clouds gathered overhead. The helmet of a fallen warrior can be seen on the left of the display, while a few white wildflowers appear on the right. Sound effects that accompany the reels as they spin include monks chanting, snakes hissing, thunder crackling in the distance and a chill wind blowing by—all very realistically recorded.

To begin the game, the number of active paylines from 1 to 25 must be specified by using the +/- toggles below the second reel next to the “Lines” indicator. Alternatively, the line numbers that flank the first and fifth reels can be clicked on to choose a number of lines, or the “Max” button below reel three can be used to set the number of lines at 25.

Next, the amount of the line bet must be set from €0.02 to €5.00, again using +/- toggles below the fourth reel. Under the third reel is a “Max” button for setting the line bet at €5, which with 25 lines in play makes the maximum total wager €125. An Autoplay button beneath the first reel can be used to select up to 500 automated spins.

The basic reel symbols on Medusa are relics of the Bronze Age—Spear Heads, Green Grapes, Ceramic Urns, Winged Sandals, Gold Stirrups, Asps and Bronze Shields. They pay line multipliers valued at 5X to 500X whenever three or more matches appear on an active payline fro left to right. Higher awards are paid for catching two or more Petrified Warriors or Temples, from 2X to 5000X. Medusa herself is wild in this game. She appears only on the middle three reels and substitutes for all other symbols except the Medusa Logo Scatter and the Pegasus Bonus symbol.

The Medusa Logo Scatter pays a total stake multiplier of 2X, 5X, 15 or 250X whenever 2, 3, 4 or 5 such symbols appear anywhere on the reels. Catching three or more Logos triggers the “Once Bitten Bonus,” awarding 10 free games with all payouts doubled. During the free spins, a Soldier symbol is added to the middle reel. Each time it appears, a cobra from the frame of the reels will attack it and a random number of “Super Spins” will be awarded. The Super Spins come with a 5X multiplier and take place after the 10 free spins have been completed. The free spins and Super Spins can also be retriggered by catching three or more Logos.

Two other bonus features are available on Medusa. The “Turned to Stone Re-spins” is activated anytime all three Medusa symbols appear on reels two, three and four. One of those reels will randomly become an expanded wild, filling all of the reel positions for three free re-spins with all payouts tripled. The re-spins cannot be retriggered, nor can the other bonuses be activated during re-spin mode.

The third feature is called the “Pegasus Bonus.” It is initiated when all three Pegasus symbols appear anywhere on the middle three reels. The rest of the symbols on the screen go dark, and “Pick Me” signs appear on the three Pegasus positions. Selecting one will reveal a cash prize and possibly a chance to “Pick Again” or “Win All.” The Pegasus Bonus can be won during the Free Games or Super Spins, when all payouts are multiplied.
