During World War I, Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (1892~1918) served with the Imperial German Army Air Service (Luftstreitkräfte). He was widely recognised as the top ace among all German fighter pilots, officially credited with 80 air combat victories. Because he was of nobility and his Fokker Dr.I triplane was painted blood red, he gained the nickname “Red Baron.” Richthofen was shot down and killed in 1918, but his legend has lived on as the subject of books, films and now an online slot game developed by Aristocrat.

Red Baron looks like a 5-reel, 25-payline slot, but thanks to Aristocrat’s “Reel Power” technology, players may choose to wager on up to 243 ways to win. Prior to play, a credit denomination must be selected from €0.01 to €5.00 by using the +/- toggles below the fourth reel. Also, the number of reels in play must be selected, from 1 to 5, using the toggles below reel two.

The “Total Stake” is calculated using a credit value multiplier of 1X for one reel, 5X for two reels, 10X for three, 20X for four and 25X for all five. That makes the minimum total wager €0.01 for 3-way play and the maximum is €125 for 243-way play at the €5.00 limit. For convenience, there are also separate Max buttons provided for selecting the denomination and number of reels.

The game begins by clicking on the green “Spin” button in the lower right corner. Across the bottom of the screen are indicators for the player’s Balance, Total Bet and the amount of the total Win. Use of the orange “Autoplay” button beneath the first reel allows repetition of 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 250 or 500 repeat spins.

The lowest winning combinations on the Red Baron slot are three or more matching card symbols, Nines through Kings; they pay multipliers of 10X to 150X. Higher payouts are received for matches of three or more Radios, Dogs, Air Ships, Females, Triplanes or Richthofens, with payouts ranging from 25X up to 1500X. The Iron Cross Medal on reel three is wild, substituting for all symbols, including the Target scatter. Catching three Target scatters on reels, two, three and four activates the Choose Your Own Mission Feature.

Choose Your Own Mission is a bonus award of 15 free spins. The feature initially displays a second screen with five Mission choices, each of which requires “capturing” Triplane symbols. Mission 1 awards a bonus multiplier of 10X for at least four Triplanes, Mission 2 awards 15X for eight Triplanes or more, and Mission 3 awards 25X for 12 Triplanes and up. Mission 4 requires no fewer than 16 Triplanes to win a multiplier of 60X, while Mission 5 yields a prize of 140X for 20 or more Triplanes. If the player captures 25 or more Triplanes, a bonus of 40X is won regardless of the mission selected.

During the Choose Your Own Mission free spins, all line wins that include the Iron Cross Medal as a substitute symbol receive a multiplier of 2X, 3X or 5X at random. The Target scatter symbols remain active during the free spins, so the bonus can be re-triggered. However, the mission does not change.

Another bonus available on Red Baron is the Gamble Feature. After each win, the player has the option to guess a card, red or black to double up the winnings, or to pick a suit—hearts, diamonds, spades or clubs—to quadruple the winnings. Choosing correctly allows gambling again, otherwise the “Take Win” button can used to collect the payout and return to the slot game mode. To make card selection a bit easier, a history of the suits of past cards drawn provides some useful information. Note that the Gamble Feature is disabled during Autoplay and the free spins mode.
