Snakes and Ladders

The ancient Indian board game known as “Snakes and Ladders” is regarded today as a worldwide classic. Two or more players take turns rolling dice to move tokens around a game board that sports gridded numbered squares. A number of “ladders” and “snakes” are pictured on the board, each of them connecting two such squares. The object of the game is to move one’s token, according to rolls of the dice, from the Start square at the bottom to the Finish square at the top, aided by the ladders or hindered by snakes.

Realistic Games Ltd. selected this enduring game as an addition to its line-up of hyper-realistic looking “Real 2 Reel” slots. Like Pentagram, Over the Rainbow, Double Bubble and other games in this series, Snakes and Ladders can be played in either “Full Cabinet View” mode, surrounded by other slot machines just like on a real casino floor, or in “Close-up” mode so that only the view of the reels can be seen on the screen.

The Snakes and Ladders game console has a very authentic 3-D look and a 3-reel, 5-payline format. Controls are located on a ledge-like panel below the reels, lush jungle vegetation containing hidden snakes and ladders frames the console and there is a tombstone-shaped marquee at the top, where the traditional Snakes and Ladders game board can be seen. At the very top is a rectangular panel displaying the game logo in red flashing lights.

To begin, the player must first select an amount to wager. This is accomplished by using the up/down arrows next to the “Bet” indicator on the left side of the control panel. Available wagers range from €0.25 to €100.00. All five paylines are active at all times, three horizontal and two diagonal. Clicking on the “Start” button on the right side of the control panel will set the reels in motion.

There is also an “Auto” button next to the Start button. Clicking on it opens an Auto Play screen with numerous options, including settings for the number of auto spins from 1 to 500. It is possible to turn off Auto Play manually at any time by simply clicking on “Stop.”

The basic symbols on the reels are traditional slot icons and it takes three matches in a row to win a payout, which is a multiplier of the total stake. Cherries pay 3X, Oranges win 4X, Bells pay 5X, Grapes are worth 6X and Watermelons yield 15X. Getting three S&L Logos in a row pays 30X, plus a repeat chance, while three Dice symbols on a win line will activate the game’s Snakes and Ladders feature.

As soon as the feature is triggered, the Real 2 Reel function automatically zooms to Full Cabinet View so that the game board can be seen. Clicking on the “Dice” button on the control panel next to Auto will cause two dice faces to appear in the rectangular display panel above the game board. Squares on the game grid will light up to show the number of spaces moved each time the dice are “rolled.”

Landing at the base of a ladder will automatically advance the player to the square at the top of the ladder. Landing on the head of a snake will cause the player to retreat to the square at the end of the snake’s tail. The game progresses until the player lands on a square with a prize number—i.e., a stake multiplier from 2X to 20X—or else reaches the “Jackpot Repeat Chance” at the top left corner of the game board. Landing on a prize using a “double number” (such as 1-1 or 2-2) will double the prize value.

Whenever the Jackpot is reached, the player receives a “Repeat Chance.” The words “Yes” and “No” will flash intermittently in the rectangular display panel. Clicking on the Dice button causes the flashing to stop on either Yes, which doubles the current prize amount, or No and the bonus round ends. Repeat Chances are given until a No is hit or nine Repeat Chances have been awarded, whichever comes first.
