Ever mindful of the allure of exotic locations and the human desire for great wealth, in late 2012 software developer Playtech released its latest Middle Eastern themed slot, “Sultan’s Gold.” The game’s graphics draw upon the cultures of Persia and the old Turkish Empire to delight and entertain players at modern online casinos, and in no way does it disappoint. In fact, there’s a new bonus feature that is certain to add to the excitement of play—the Mystery Scatter.

Sultan’s Gold features a standard 5-reel, 20-payline format. The amount of the wager per line may be adjusted using the +/- toggles beneath the third reel. Available denominations range from €0.20 to €500, thus making the maximum possible bet per spin an amazing €10,000. Note, however, that Sultan’s Gold does not have any Autoplay option, and the wagering is fixed at one credit per line played.

The reels on Sultan’s Gold display Playtech’s standard card symbols, Nines through Aces, seemingly fashioned out of gold. Matching three or more such symbols awards a payline multiplier of 5X to 150X. Greater rewards can be gained by matching just two or more symbols for the Scimitar, Magic Lamp, Belly Dancer or Sultan, from 5X to 5000X.

The Palace symbol with its four minarets serves three different purposes in this game. First, it is wild and substitutes for any of the symbols on the reels. Second, it is the game’s scatter symbol. Whenever 3, 4 or 5 Palace symbols appear anywhere in any of the reel positions, there is a payout multiplier of 2X, 20X or 200X, respectively, times the total wager.

The third function of the Palace symbol is the most lucrative. Catching three or more Palaces anywhere on the reels initiates the Free Games Bonus, worth 10 free spins. During the free spins, the Palace symbols remain in play, which means the free spins can be retriggered indefinitely.

The Free Games bonus is announced in the main game with a fireworks display appearing above the minarets. The “Spin” button shows “Click Here” to start the bonus, then a second screen shows the interior of the Palace with a single symbol window in the center. Random symbols begin spinning in the window, and when the spinning stops the symbol that remains will become the “Mystery Scatter” for all free spins.

The Mystery Scatter wins when scattered anywhere across the reels and pays according to the original symbol’s paytable, multiplied times the entire wager. In other words, only two matches are required for a scatter win on any Mystery Scatter other than the card symbols. Note that during the free spins the Palace can no longer be used to substitute for the Mystery Scatter symbol, even though it remains a separate scatter symbol.

One of the more entertaining aspects of Sultan’s Gold is its lively animation and accompanying sounds. All of the card symbols shimmer when involved in a winning combination. The Scimitars turn and complete a chopping motion, the Magic Lamps tilt and let out a puff of sparkling pink smoke, and the Belly Dancers strut their stuff, giving the player a good look at the source of their talent.

When the Sultan is part of a win, he takes a drag from his hookah and lets out a huge puff of smoke. The Palace symbols open their doors and reveal the word “Wild” amid a burst of light, and the frames of any symbol on a winning line light up. Drumming accompanies the spinning of the reels, alarm bells sound when any “5 in a row” occurs and hypnotic Middle Eastern music plays whenever the Paytable is viewed.
