Software developer Playtech is constantly coming up with new variations on previously successful themes. In this case, “Ugga Bugga” is an upgrade to the popular “Multispin Videoslot” format pioneered with such games as Goblin’s Cave, Ocean Princess and Tropic Reels. The primary difference here is an increase in the number of active reels to ten, along with more reel symbols—14 of them in all.

The motif for Ugga Bugga is a dark and dank tropical rainforest. The symbols on the reels reflect the jungle atmosphere, including local foods, native huts, drums, masks and idols. However, other than the pounding drums that accompany each spin of the reels, the sound effects are completely whimsical and unrelated.

Available coin denominations range from €0.01 to €5.00. The value can be adjusted by using the +/- toggles next to the bet indicator at the lower right corner of the screen. It is necessary to bet a minimum of ten credits to cover all ten of the game’s paylines. The amount wagered per line can be adjusted from 1 to 5 credits by using the “Bet One” button on the control panel below the reels. Clicking on Bet Max will apply a wager of 5 credits to each payline, but it does not change the denomination of each credit. The maximum total wager is €250 per spin.

Clicking on “Spin” sets the reels in the lower left payline window in motion. After the three reels come to rest, the player can use the “Hold” buttons below the reels to freeze 1, 2 or all 3 symbols in place for a follow-up spin. When a symbol is held, it appears on all ten paylines. The player also has the option to hold none of the reel symbols in place.

Clicking on Spin again will cause all unheld positions on the reels to spin independently and come to a halt one at a time. This happens very quickly on Ugga Bugga, another aspect of the format upgrade. Payouts are made for the highest winning combinations on each payline, and the amounts paid are displayed in the centre of each line. There are also displays for Line Bet, Bet and Win amounts to the left of the reels.

Whenever a payout is made on any of the reels, clicking on “Paytable” will reveal exactly what the winning combinations are; a horizontal multi-coloured bar passes immediately behind them. For example, a single Native Warrior on a payline is the lowest payout, worth a multiplier of 1X. The very highest payout is awarded for three Wild Idol symbols in a row, valued at up to 1000X and making the top prize €250,000 for betting the maximum with a €5.00 credit denomination and winning on all ten paylines.

Other symbols include Red, Green and Blue Local Foods; Green, Orange and Brown Native Huts; Brown, Red and Black Drums; and Orange, Red and Black Masks. Alignments pay from 2X to 125X, and random combinations of Local Foods, Native Huts, Drums and Masks, respectively, also generate cash awards, as do random alignments of mixed Drums and Masks. The Wild Idol substitutes for any symbol, and catching just 1 or 2 of them pays 1X or 2X, respectively.

A pull-down menu for “Options” can be accessed by clicking on the “Tools” symbol at the top right of the screen. “Game Settings,” “Audio Settings” and “General Settings” allow the player to disable the game sounds, background sounds or dealer voices. It is also possible to adjust the game speed for normal play or fast play. There is, however, no Autoplay function.
