The “Where’s The Gold” slot game derives its theme from the gold mines of America’s Old West, when droves of fortune-hunters staked their claims in California, hoping to strike it rich. It was developed by Aristocrat Technologies, the original pioneer of the “free spins” bonus feature that has become so popular on online slots.

Where’s The Gold features a 5-reel, 25-payline format. The background scene for the reels is a desert sunrise motif, with various cacti and grasses silhouetted against a colourful landscape. All controls are located at the bottom of the display.

To begin, choose from 1 to 25 “Lines” by using the +/- toggles below the third reel or by clicking on the line numbers that flank the first and fifth reels. The amount of the “Bet” per line may be adjusted by using +/- toggles beneath the third reel. Available denominations range from €0.03 to €4.00, thus making the maximum possible wager €100 per spin. Instead of a “Max Bet” option, “Max” buttons are provided separately for the Lines and Bet per line amounts.

The reels on Where’s The Gold display the common card symbols, Jacks through Aces. Payouts are made for matching three or more of these symbols for payouts of 10X to 150X. Higher rewards can be gained by matching symbols for Digging Tools or Cover Wagon, from 50X to 300X for three of a kind or more on an active payline. Catching just two or more of the Mine or Prospector symbols pays a line multiplier from 2X to 1000X.

There is no Wild symbol on reels during normal slat play, but there is a Dynamite scatter symbol on each of the reels. Any time 3, 4 or 5 Dynamite scatter symbols appear anywhere on the reels, a payout is made times the total wager of 2X, 10X or 50X, respectively. Catching three or more Dynamite scatter symbols also activates the Where’s the Gold Feature, worth up to ten free spins with as many as three separate Wild symbols.

To reveal how many free spins are available, the player must choose one of five random prospectors presented on a new screen. They may include any of seven characters: Findo the Dog, Professor Gold, Peter Panner, Mary Money, Happy Lucky, Winnie Fortune or Nugget Ned. A spotlight will shine down on the one selected as all five dig for Nuggets and Reel Symbols. The number of nuggets determines how many free spins are activated, while the Reel Symbols turn to Gold and are Wild throughout the free spins. The Dynamite scatter remains on the reels, so that the feature may be retriggered.

Another bonus aspect of the Where’s The Gold slots game is its Gamble Feature. After each win, the player has the option to guess a card, red or black to double up the winnings, or to pick a suite—hearts, diamonds, spades or clubs—to quadruple the winnings. Choosing correctly allows gambling again and again up to a maximum of five times, otherwise the “Take Win” button can used to collect the payout and return to the slot game mode. To make card selection a bit easier, a history of the suits of past cards drawn provides some useful information.

One other useful option on this slot is its Autoplay function. Clicking on the Autoplay button under the first reel will reveal a pop-up menu for selecting from 5 to 500 effortless respins. The game will only pause when the player clicks on “Stop Spin” or the Free Games Feature is activated. Note that the Gamble Feature is disabled during the Autoplay mode.
