Wings of Gold

Playtech’s Wings of Gold slot game pays tribute to aviators across generations, filling the reels with airplanes that once protected the homeland and made the skies over Europe safe for travel. Befitting the slot’s aerial theme, the bonus round is sky high, offering up to 100 free spins plus an expanding wild symbol that double the value of wins.

Wings of Gold features Playtech’s standard 5-reel, 20-payline format. The amount of the wager per payline can be set anywhere between €0.20 and €20, making €400 the maximum total bet possible. Basic symbols are the customary cards, Nines through Aces, but with a wrinkle. Payouts are made for matching as few as two Nines or Tens on an active payline while the other symbols require three or more matches. Payouts for line wins run from 3X to 200X.

Other symbols on the reels include three types of aircraft—Single Prop, Fighter Jet and Twin Engine Prop. There is also a red-haired Female Officer. All of these symbols require just two matches for a payout. The awards start at 10 times the line bet and run as high as 5000X for five matching Female Officers.

The wild symbol on Wings of Gold is the Aviator, who looks quite dapper with his leather pilot’s cap and goggles. The Aviator appears only on reels 2, 3 and 4 and substitutes for all other symbols except the Wings of Gold Logo scatter.

A special option on Wings of Gold is the XtraWin button at the top right corner of the screen. Clicking on XtraWin activates the Expanding Wild feature, causing the Aviator to fill all positions on the reel when it is part of a winning combination. The cost of the XtraWin feature is an additional 50% added to the total wager on each spin. This surcharge is, however, included as part of any scatter wins. The XtraWin mode can be deactivated anytime between spins.

The Wings of Gold Logo is the scatter symbol for this game. When 3, 4 or 5 Logos appear anywhere on the reels, a payout is awarded equivalent to the total amount wagered times a multiplier of 4X, 20X or 100X, respectively. Catching three or more Wings of Gold Logo scatters also triggers the Medal of Honor Bonus.

At the beginning of the Medal of Honor Bonus round, the slot screen fades away and three military medals are seen with a runway scene as the backdrop. The player must choose one of the medals to reveal how many free games are available. Instead of simply showing the number of free spins, however, another screen is displayed with five blank reels that gradually fill in with medals. The more medals that appear, the more free games are awarded, such as 24 free game for 8 medals, 36 free games for 12 medals or 100 free games for the maximum 15 medals displayed.

Once the free spins begin, the Aviator becomes an expanding wild symbol for all spins, regardless of whether the XtraWin mode has been activated or not. When the wild symbol appears in a winning combination, it also doubles the value of the payout. During the free spins, the Wings of Gold Logo scatters appear on the reels, too, so it is possible to retrigger the Medal of Honor Bonus indefinitely.

The animation and sound effects on Wings of Gold are minimal. There is no Autoplay function, and the betting range is rather restrictive. What makes the slot so enticing is the possibility of gaining a huge number of free spins and flying off with a massive cash reward.
