Blade is The Marvel Comics superhero known as “Blade” is a half-vampire, half-mortal black man who becomes a protector of humans, while slaying the evil undead. He was created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Gene Colan in 1973. Twenty-five years later, Marvel Enterprises released a full-screen movie version called “Blade – The Daywalker,” starring Wesley Snipes. It was followed by “Blade II” in 2000 and then “Blade: Trilogy” in 2004.

In 2005, Cryptologic obtained the rights from Marvel to develop Blade as an online slot game with five reels, nine paylines and a free spin bonus. Its debut coincided with the introduction of Spike TV’s short-lived television series based on the comic book character in 2006.

In 2010, Playtech came on the scene with its own Blade slots under the license granted by Marvel Enterprises a year earlier. This new version also features five reels, but with 20 paylines, there are many more ways to win, and linkage to the Marvel Multi-Level Mystery Progressive Jackpot adds the excitement of random progressive wins.

Winning symbol combinations on Playtech’s Blade slots include four different types of supernatural weapons, a female vampire, and the traditional card symbols, Tens through Aces, which “bleed” when matched on an active payline. The Blade character is wild, substituting for all symbols except Blade scatter emblems and the special “Blade Split” symbol on reel five.

With credit denominations from €0.01 to €1, Blade slots allow wagering of 1 to 10 credits per line on any number of paylines up to 20. The value of each credit can be adjusted by clicking on the pop-up menu beneath the first reel. To start the game, click “Spin.” Reels can be halted instantly by clicking “Stop.” Winnings show in the “Win” display below the fifth reel, and the current balance appears in the lower left screen corner. The Auto Start feature can be enabled for effortless play of up to 99 repeat bets.

Even though the Blade slots game has only five reels, the appearance of the special “Blade Split” symbol on the fifth reel causes the last symbol in any winning sequence to be split in two, thus making six-reel payouts possible. The highest payout is made for six Blade characters on an active payline, which is worth 25,000 times the amount of the winning line bet. If there are two or more winning combinations when the Blade Split appears, each of them will have the last symbol split in two.

Other line payouts start at 2X and increase to as high as 4,000X. The scatter bonuses of 6X, 66X or 666X the total bet are awarded whenever 3, 4 or 5 Blade logos appear on any of the reels. Three or more scatters also initiates 15 free spins with revolving multipliers of 2X, 3X, 4X and 5X on each spin. The multipliers increase on each winning spin and decrease on each losing one. During the free spins, the Blade scatter emblem becomes an extra wild, and additional free spins can be triggered indefinitely.

The random Marvel Multi-Level Mystery Progressive Jackpot has four tiers—Power, Extra Power, Super Power, and Ultimate Power. They deliver four jackpots, starting at €50, €500, €5,000 and €100,000, respectively. Payouts as high as €500,000 have been recorded.

Although the characters on Playtech’s Blade slots do not resemble the movie or TV actors that portrayed them, there is considerable animation involved. Winning combinations are accompanied by dramatic music as the still images “come to life.” For example, the female vampires bares her fangs and scratches at the screen with sharp, bloody fingernails, while Blade pivots and slices symbols in two with his sword to enable the Blade Split feature.
