Captain America Slots

Although widely regarded as a Marvel Comics creation, the fictional superhero known as Captain America predates the Stan Lee era of graphic novels by two decades. The character first appeared in Timely Comics in 1941—a collaboration of famed artist Jack Kirby and writer Joe Simon. Heavily influenced by World War II, the duo invented a frail U.S. soldier named Steve Rogers and used an experimental serum to transform him into the ultimate human fighting machine.

Carrying an indestructible shield that can be thrown as a weapon, Captain America battles the Axis powers to aid the Allies’ war effort. Following a long period of suspended animation in the 1950s, he was reawakened to team up with Marvel’s greatest band of superheroes, The Avengers, in 1964. More recently, Paramount Pictures released “Captain America: The First Avenger” in cinemas in 2011, starring Chris Evans in the starring role, followed by “The Avengers” full-length movie in 2012.

In 2005, software developer Cryptologic obtained the rights to introduce Marvel Comics characters as themes of online slot games. Captain America was one of their earliest creations—part of the Wagerlogic Marvel Jackpots series—and despite rival Playtech’s tie-up with Marvel Enterprises in 2009, this version of the game is still the only one available to date.

The Cryptologic Captain America slots feature five reels and 25 paylines. Credit denominations range from €0.01 to €5, with wagering of one credit per line up to a maximum bet of €250. The value of each credit can be adjusted by clicking on the up-down arrows next to the Bet window beneath the fifth reel. To start the game, click “Spin.” Winnings appear in the “Paid” display at the very bottom of the screen, with the current balance show immediately to the left and the Total Bet to the right. The Autoplay feature can be enabled for effortless repetition of bets.

In keeping with the patriotic wartime theme of the comic book series, winning combinations of symbols on the reels include matching three or more Boots, Helmet, Serum, Top Secret dossier, American Flag or Cap’s Shield. Higher payouts are awarded for lining up Statue of Liberty, Nazi Officer, Steve Rogers or Red Skull symbols on an active payline. Captain America is wild on all reels, substituting for any symbol except the Logo scatter emblem.

The highest line payout possible is awarded for five consecutive Captain America symbols, worth 25,000 times the line bet. Other payouts range from 5X to 5,000X multipliers. There are also three randomly awarded progressive jackpots—the Marvel Hero Jackpot starting at €5,000, the Super Hero Jackpot from €500 and the Hero Jackpot beginning at €50. The way the Marvel Jackpots link works, the bigger the bet the better the chances are of winning one of the three jackpots.

Getting five Logo scatter emblems pays 100 times the total bet, while 4, 3 or 2 Logos award 15X, 5X and 1X, respectively. The Bonus Round on Captain America slots is activated by catching three or more Logo scatter emblems on any of the reels. The normal slots game is suspended as the scene shifts to a desolate battlefield, where Captain America must shoot down enemy planes that coming zooming in from overhead.

In total, the player receives five shots at the planes. Shooting is accomplished by aiming a target indicator and clicking on the computer’s mouse button. Cash prizes are awarded at random as each plane falls from the sky. One of the planes contains the Red Skull character, and if it destroyed, 15 free spins are awarded in addition to all credit won on the battlefield.

Throughout the free games mode, all wins are doubled. Although Logo scatter emblems still appear and earn multipliers in the Bonus Round, the bonus feature may not be retriggered.
