Microgaming has the greatest number of online slot games on the Internet—more than 300 of them in all. They include just about every format available, from dozens of three-reel, single payline classics to the absurdly intricate Dolphin Crest slot with its five reels and 3,125 ways to win. Most players prefer the familiarity of five-reel slots with a fairly limited number of paylines, to keep per-spin costs down if for no other reason.

In this regard, High Life slots have become something of a standard. They offer a simple five-reel, five-payline format that is easy to understand and play. The paylines are the three horizontal combinations plus the “V” and inverted “V” patterns. In total, there are just 22 winning combinations, which makes trying to understand the payouts much easier than with more complex formats.

Catching three or more card symbols, Nines through Aces, on an active payline will yield a multiplier of the line bet from 3X to 150X. Higher rewards can be achieved by obtaining three or more symbols for Champagne, Cigars, Diamonds or Yachts, with payouts ranging from 10X to 1,500X.

What makes the High Life slots especially unique is the way the winning combinations are accounted for. In most games, matching symbols must line up consecutively from left to right. This game, however, has “all symbols pay any on a payline.” In other words, the High Life slot pays any winning combination on a pay line, even if the symbols are not consecutive.

For example, a line containing A-K-A-A-Yacht would typically be a loser in most games. But here, the payout is 5X for the three Aces, even though they do not appear in order. In fact, the same line would pay 5X even if the distribution were A-K-A-Yacht-A. The symbols do not need to be adjacent.

Credit denominations can be varied from €0.25 to €2 by using the +/1 toggles that appear below the second reel. Select from 1 to 5 paylines and wager 1 to 20 credits per line. The maximum bet is 100 credits or €200. Start play by clicking “Spin.” Under reel five above the Spin control, amounts won are displayed in the “Win” counter. Although there is no Autoplay function, a “Quick Spin” toggle allows games to be played at faster pace, if so desired.

The Ferrari serves as the game’s scatter symbol. Scatter bonuses of 1X, 3X, 10X or 100X are paid as multipliers on the total bet when 2, 3, 4 or 5 Ferraris are displayed, no matter where they appear on the reels. The Mansion symbol, appearing only on reels two and four, is wild and substitutes for all symbols except the Ferrari scatter.

Catching three or more Scattered Ferrari symbols activates the High Life bonus feature. The cityscape background changes theme from blue to yellow three and ten Free Spins are awarded with all wins doubled. Thanks to the 2X multiplier, the top jackpot on the free spins is elevated to a massive 120,000 coins. The clickety-clack of the spinning reels is replaced by a flourish of trumps whenever a winning combination appears. Should the Scattered Ferraris trigger the Free Spins, a full brass orchestra swings into action to provide an exciting accompaniment to the bonus game. In many ways, simpler is better when playing slots, and High Life’s “any combo wins” rule certainly makes this one of the easier games to play and win.
