The boxing saga of fictional Rocky “Italian Stallion” Balboa began in 1976 with United Artists’ introduction of “Rocky,” a film starring Sylvester Stallone as a small-time boxer going nowhere in life. When a contender is injured prior to a big fight, Rocky gets a chance to be Philadelphia’s “hometown hero” in a bout with heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, played by Carl Weathers. Although the struggling southpaw doesn’t win, he shows great heart in going the distance, supported by his shy girlfriend Adrian Pennino (Talia Shire) and alcoholic brother, Paulie (Burt Young).

In subsequent movie sequels, Rocky gets the rematch with Creed and the title belt in 1979’s “Rocky II,” defends his championship against Clubber Lang (Mr. T) in 1982’s “Rocky III,” and defeats Russia’s heavyweight hopeful, Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), in 1985’s “Rocky IV.” The series continues with the Italian Stallion’s career seemingly ended by brain damage in 1990’s “Rocky V,” but followed by a comeback attempt in the 2006 finale, “Rocky Balboa.” Altogether, the series has grossed more than $1 billion at the box offices worldwide.

In 2010, to celebrate the enduring franchise and take advantage of technological innovations, software developer Playtech arranged with copyright owner MGM to release a “Rocky” slots game featuring the faces of the actual actors associated with the films. There on the reels are Stallone, Weathers, Mr. T, Lundgren, Young and Shire, looking every bit as real as they did on the big screen. Bill Conti’s familiar musical scores accompany portions of the game, too.

Playtech’s Rocky slots feature five reels and 25 paylines. Five of the reel symbols are Adrian, Paulie, Clubber, Drago and Creed. When they line up in winning combinations, scenes from the various films are shown on the reels with dialog as well as cinema-quality motion. Five other reel symbols are the red, white and blue letters, R, O, C, K and Y. When they line up in order across the five reels to spell “Rocky,” the letters spin and glow, and the entire wager is multiplied by 5X as a reward.

Credit denominations for Rocky slots range from €0.01 to €5. The credit value can be adjusted by using the pop-up menu under reel one. Choose from 1 to 25 paylines and bet up to 10 credits per line. The maximum wager is 250 credits per spin or €1,250 total. Clicking on “Spin” starts the game and “Stop” halts the reels. Winnings are shown in the “Win” display below reel five. The current Balance appears in the lower left corner of the screen. After each win, the Gamble Feature is enabled to potentially double the amount won by forecasting the color of a hidden card, red or black. Using Autoplay allows repeat betting for up to 99 spins.

The Rocky character is wild on all reels and substitutes for any symbol except Italian Stallion scatters, Bonus Boxing Gloves or the R-O-C-K-Y feature. Catching five Rocky characters on an active payline yields the highest line payout, 10,000X. Other payouts range from 5X to 1,000X per line bet. Scatter bonuses of 1X, 5X, 10X or 100X are paid on the total bet when 2, 3, 4 or 5 Italian Stallions are displayed, plus 15, 20 or 25 free spins at double value for 3, 4 or 5.

During the Free Games mode, all payouts are doubled. Additional Rocky wild symbols are added to the reels, and three or more Scattered Italian Stallions retrigger the bonus for 15 extra free spins. There is no limit on the number of free spins that can be won.

In the regular slots mode, when both Boxing Gloves appear on reels one and five, a “Knockout Bonus” is activated. The player chooses one of the three opponents—Clubber, Drago or Creed—for a 10-round bout. Each round won earns a cash prize, and all matches end in a knockout in Rocky’s favour. A knockout prior to the tenth round wins all subsequent rounds. Note, however, that the knockout bonus cannot be triggered during the free games mode.
