When software developer Playtech got the go ahead from Marvel Entertainment to create games based on comic book superheroes in 2009, they had their pick of dozens of characters. It comes as no surprise, however, that The Incredible Hulk was selected as one of the first two themes to debut, the other being Iron Man. The gargantuan green guy has been an enduringly popular franchise ever since Stan Lee and Jack Kirby dreamt him up in 1962.

The back story on The Incredible Hulk is that Dr. Bruce Banner, a brainy but boring scientist, invents a gamma bomb that explodes, accidently exposing him to toxic radiation. Instead of killing him, it mutates his cells so that he transforms into a massive green humanoid with super strength but a terrible temper and not a lot of higher level thought processes. When the Hulk calms down, he reverts back to the docile doctor. Thereafter, it’s a Jekyll-and-Hyde existence for Banner-Hulk, with anger as the trigger.

In 1977~82, Universal Studios brought “The Incredible Hulk” to television as a series starring Bill Bixby as Banner and former Mr. Universe Lou Ferrigno as his monstrous alter ego. In 2003, the first movie adaptation was released, starring Eric Bana along with state-of-the-arts special effects as the big fellow. Then, in 2005, came the first slot version of the story—Cryptologic’s 5-reel, 9-payline jackpot game, simply titled “Hulk.”

No doubt it was Universal’s Hollywood 2008 remake of “The Incredible Hulk” with Edward Norton as Banner that excited Playtech’s choice of Marvel characters. They devised a 5-reel, 50-payline format for the new slot game, added a bonus game and free spins, and gave the colossal creature some room to roam wild as a special “Expanding Hulk” feature.

The Incredible Hulk slots pay nicely when three or more Nines through Aces are matched on active paylines. They pay even more for combinations of Police Cars, Helicopters, Glowing Chemicals and Radioactivity symbols. The Hulk symbols appearing on reels two, three and four are wild, of course. Scatter Logos initiate free spins, while Smash Bonus symbols on reels one and five gain access to the animated bonus feature.

Credit denominations range from €0.01 to €5, with 1 to 10 credits bet per line up to 50 paylines in total. The maximum bet is 250 credits or €2,500 in total. The credit value can be adjusted by using the pop-up menu below reel one. Clicking “Spin” will start the game, and “Stop” halts the reels. Winnings can be seen in the “Win” counter under reel five. The current balance is displayed in the lower left corner of the screen. Using Auto Start allows up to 99 repeat bets.

The top line payout is 4,000X the line wager for five Radioactivity symbols aligned on an active payline. Other payouts vary from 2X to 500X. Scatter bonuses of 10X, 25X or 100X the total bet are awarded when 3, 4 or 5 Logo symbols appear anywhere on the screen. Scatters also activate 10 free spins with all wins tripled.

Wild Hulks substitute for all but scatter symbols on reels two, three and four. Whenever one appears in the center of reel three, it expands to fill the reel and activates two free respins. If all three Hulks appear in any position, they each expand to fill the reel and trigger one free respin.

When the Smash Bonus symbols appear on reels one and five, the Smash Bonus begins. In a new screen, the player identifies which of seven police cars the Hulk should smash, releasing cash prizes. One of three helicopters can be destroyed, too, for a multiplier. If the “Hulk Rage Feature” occurs at random during the Smash Bonus, the green guy will demolish all seven police cars.

Just to add to the fun, The Incredible Hulk is also part of the Marvel Multi-Level Mystery Progressive Jackpot network. There are four tiers of jackpots awarded completely at random—Power, Extra Power, Super Power and Ultimate Power—starting at €50, €500, €5,000 and €100,000, respectively. Payouts as high as €500,000 are possible.
