Director Ridley Scott struck gold when he cast Russell Crowe in his 2000 historical epic film “Gladiator.” Not only did Crowe win the Academy Award for Best Actor that year, but the movie also garnered four more Oscars, including Best Picture. Along with sales of DVDs and other rights, Gladiator has earned Universal Pictures and Dreamworks over $457 million since its debut in cinemas.

The story follows the life of a betrayed Roman general called Maximus (Crowe), whose family is murdered by an emperor’s corrupt son named Commodus, who is played by Joaquin Phoenix. To exact revenge, the general comes to Rome as a gladiator. Other starring roles are played by Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, Derek Jacobi as Gracchus, Oliver Reed as Proximo, Djimon Hounsou as Juba, Ralf Möller as Hagen and Richard Harris as Marcus Aurelius.

In 2009, software maker Playtech arranged with Universal to bring out a five-reel, 25-payline slot game based upon Gladiator, featuring scenes from the movie and using actual actors as the reel symbols. Perhaps Crowe was a bit beyond the developer’s budget for royalties, so the key figures on the reels are Commodus and Lucilla, supported by Gracchus, Proximo and Juba. Video clips are shown whenever the characters appear in winning combinations. The top payout is awarded for five Commodus characters on an active payline, worth 5,000 times the line bet. Other line payouts range from 7X to 500X.

With credit denominations ranging from €0.01 to €5, Gladiator slots allow wagers of 1 to 10 credits per line on any number of paylines up to 25 for a maximum bet of €1,250. The credit value can be easily adjusted by clicking on the pop-up menu beneath the first reel. To start the game, click on “Spin.” Reels can be halted instantly by clicking on “Stop.” Winnings can be seen in the “Win” display under the fifth reel, and the current Balance appears in the lower left corner of the screen. The Autoplay feature allows up to 99 repeat bets to be made automatically.

The Coliseum is the scatter symbol for Gladiator slots. Scatter bonuses of 1X, 4X, 20X or 100X times the total bet are paid when 2, 3, 4 or 5 Coliseums appear, while three or more scatter symbols initiate the Coliseum Bonus, awarding free spins, multipliers, additional scatter symbols and extra wild symbols. In the free spins mode, the bonus cannot be retriggered, but a Commodus appearing on reel three awards three extra free spins.

On the three middle reels there are Wild Helmet symbols. They can substitute for any symbol except the Coliseum scatter. Whenever all three Wild Helmets appear on reels 2, 3, and 4, the Gladiator Slots Bonus is activated, with mystery payouts awarded for choosing nine helmets colored Gold, Silver, and Bronze.

Another bonus aspect of the Gladiator slots game is its Gamble Feature. Following any win, the player has the option to guess a card, red or black to for double up the winnings. A correct selection allows redoubling, else the “Collect” button can be clicked to retain the amount won and return to the slot game mode. A history of past cards drawn provides some information to make the choice a bit easier.

Although Russell Crowe’s absence from Gladiator may be felt, the presence of his character is evident in the slot’s Wild Helmets. Whenever they are pat of a winning combination, a warrior figure appears in silhouette, as if fresh from battle—no doubt a form of homage to the Oscar-winning actor’s performance in the film version.
