Andy Murray will look to seal his third Grand Slam title this morning as he faces off against Novak Djokovic in the final round of the Australian Open. In opposition, the Serbian is looking to scoop his eighth Grand Slam and his fifth Australian Open gong.
The two men have met on court 23 times previously, Djokovic winning a total of 15 matches to Murray`s eight. Their head-to-head record on hard also reads 13-6 in the favour of the world number one. Indeed, this encounter will be the fourth time that the men have met in this competition down under, having played in straight years from 2011 to 2013.
The final of 2011 was won by Djokovic in straight sets, the 27-year-old beating Murray 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. The pair met again in the semi-final a year later, the Serb managing to come from being two sets to one down to beat off the Brit in five (6-3, 3-6, 6-7, 6-1, 7-5). He would win back-to-back tournaments by seeing off Rafael Nadal in the final (5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5). His third Australian Open crown in succession was completed by beating Murray 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the 2013 final.
Djokovic and Murray have played out three tie-breaks in their previous Australian Open battles, they are 1/2 with ladbrokes to need to be separated by another at any point during the match-up. Twelve-to-five with bet365 and a cluster of other bookmakers says that they will compete for one in the first set, whilst Coral`s 9/4 says that they will need one in the second. All three of the tie-breaks played by Djokovic have appeared in the opening set whilst the four played by Murray have only once come in the first set, twice come in the second and once in the third.
With his superior record over the Scotsman, it is not hard to see why the seven-time Grand Slam winner is the favourite to secure his eighth title. bet365 and a number of other turf accountants are offering a price of 4/9 on Djokovic triumphing. Murray can be supported at 7/4 with bet365.
The world number one`s semi-final victory over reigning champion Stanislas Wawrinka saw the first time in this year`s tournament that one of the finalists had to go the full five sets against an opponent. The Swiss number two was finished off 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. bet365 have 2/5 on their being over 3.5 sets tomorrow with ladbrokes having the best price on the two men playing out five sets - that`s 11/4.
Djokovic`s final set victory over Wawrinka was the second occasion on which he took a set by 6-0. The first time came in the first set against Andrey Kuznetsov in the second round. Murray recorded his own bagel victory in his semi-final against Tomas Berdych, winning 6-0 in the second set. A price of 33/1 with betfair says that another set will be taken in this fashion.
What`s more, Murray`s four set victory over Berdych was the first time in this tournament that the 27-year-old had to come back from losing the opening set to win the match. This is something that tomorrow`s rival has never had to do. Murray is available at 6/1 with Betvictor to lose the first set and win the trophy whilst Djokovic is 17/4 with sportingbet to record a similar victory.
Finally, should you think that one of the two players will grab the Grand Slam in a comfortable fashion, you can get 2/1 (bet365) on the Serb securing a straight sets win whilst Murray to do the same is 13/2 with the same bookmaker.
