Just four of the top ten seeds have made it through to the second week of action at Wimbledon. Can anyone spring the ultimate shock though and stop Serena Williams winning her sixth title here? Here is our guide to the best of the bets from the Ladies tournament.
Laura Robson has become the first British lady to make the second week at Wimbledon since 1998 (Sam Smith since you ask) and is 50/1 (boylesports) to be the first since virginia Wade in 1977 to lift the trophy. This looks a terrible price though as first she has to try and get through a fourth round match with Kaia Kanepi and she is the 23/20 (boylesports) outsider for victory against the Estonian. This could be a tight encounter between two well matched players so it makes sense to back the match to go three sets at 11/8 (BETVICTOR). Should Robson get through that match then she will likely have the small matter of a quarter-final with Serena Williams which will likely be a step too far for her.
Speaking of Serena she is the bookmakers favourites and we recommended her at 7/5 just after her win at the French Open and she is now an unbackable 3/10 (betway) to win the title for the sixth time. Serena has dropped just 11 games in her three matches so far and she is 5/4 (BWIN) to win the tournament without dropping a set.
The second favourite is the 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova. The Czech player is a 12/1 (BETVICTOR/CORAL/betway) chance and that might offer some each-way appeal as she is in the opposite half of the draw to Williams. Her next opponent is Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro who has won just one of the five previous meetings between these two. Sloane Stephens is a 20/1 (BETVICTOR/SPREADEX/BWIN) chance and the third favourite. And should have no problems in round four with Monica Puig who is 29/10 (BOYLESPORTS) for the shock victory.
Li Na is a 25/1 (GENERAL) chance though the fact that she is in the same half of the draw as Serena means she offers no appeal. The Chinese player has been taken to three sets in each of her last two matches and is one I am keen to take on. Her next opponent is Roberta Vinci who impressed when seeing off Dominika Cibulkova in the last round. The Italian has to be worth a play in the handicap market with ladbrokes who are offering 10/11 Vinci with +3.5.
Beaten finalist last year Agnieszka Radwanska is a 33/1 (BOYLESPORTS/BETVICTOR) chance to go one better this year while also 33/1 (BOYLESPORTS/BETVICTOR) is Sabine Lisicki. Both players are very capable though have to find a way past Serena.
The value bet to me is Marion Bartoli at 40/1 (BOYLESPORTS) who was a finalist here in 2007. The French player has not dropped a set so far in the tournament and will not be worried by a fourth round meeting with Karin Knapp or a potential quarter-final with Sloane Stephens or Monica Puig. Her likely opponent in the semi-finals is Kvitova and the French player holds a 3-1 advantage in their meetings including in their one grass court meeting.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Marion Bartoli EW, 40/1 (BOYLESPORTS)
SILVER: Roberta Vinci +3.5 against Li Na, 10/11 (ladbrokes)
BRONZE: Robson and Kanepi to go three sets, 11/8 (BETVICTOR)
