It is the classic paradox what happens an irresistible force meets an immovable object or in this case when a Brazil side unbeaten in a competitive home game since 1975 take on a Spain team unbeaten in their last 29 matches and without a competitive loss since the 2010 World Cup stages. We will find out this Sunday in the Confederations Cup final.
Bookmakers make Brazil 10/11 (GENERAL) favourites to lift the trophy and I can see why. In a game between two sides of similar ability the advantage an extra days rest that Brazil have had and playing at home should give them that little edge. That being said though it is always hard to oppose Spain on the big occasions and they are 19/20 (bet365/ladbrokes) to lift the one trophy missing from their collection.
Those wishing to get involved in the match betting can back Brazil at 17/10 (paddy Power/CORAL/william hill) to win in 90 minutes while Spain are 19/10 (william hill) and the draw (which I suppose would sort the paradox out ) is a 12/5 (GENERAL) chance. It should be a fascinating game for the neutral to watch though in terms of the match betting not a game I would be looking to get involved with.
Neymar has netted three times in the tournament so far and could be value at 2/1 (BETVICTOR) to score anytime. Fred is another who has been among the goals netting three times in the last two games and he is 13/5 (BETVICTOR) to score anytime. Fernando Torres is the tournament top scorer with five goals and he is 12/5 (BETVICTOR) to net anytime.
I am keen on Paulinho who is a midfielder who finds himself in great scoring positions. He has netted twice already in this event and in six of his last nine in all competitions and odds of 11/2 (GENERAL) to score anytime look generous. The second player I will recommend is Jordi Alba who is 10/1 (BETVICTOR) in the anytime scorer market. Of the times I have seen Brazil under pressure it was when they were being attacked down the flank. Alba gets forward a lot and has a knack of getting crucial goals netting in the Euro 2012 final and grabbing two in the group game with Nigeria.
In the score markets you can back both teams to score at 4/5 (BETVICTOR/bet365) as the South Americans have scored in their last 20 matches (and at least two in each of their Confederations Cup games) while Spain have scored in all but one of their last 16 games (the semi-final with Italy). Goals tend to be the order of the day in this tournament with four of the last six games going over 2.5. You can get 9/11 (32 RED) that the game goes under 2.5 while over 2.5 goals is 11/10 (32 RED).
Earlier that afternoon Uruguay take on Italy in the third and fourth placed play-off in a game in the blistering early heat in Brazil. The South Americans are 8/5 (SPREADEX) for victory while Italy are 19/10 (bet365) and the 90 minute draw is 5/2 (GENERAL). The over 2.5 goals would have paid in each of the four Uruguay games so far and in three of the four Italy games. The 4/5 (SKYBET) on over 2.5 goals could be value though I think why not have a play on over 3.5 goals at 2/1 (GENERAL).
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Paulinho to score anytime v Spain, 11/2 (GENERAL)
SILVER: Jordi Alba to score anytime v Brazil, 10/1 (BETVICTOR)
BRONZE: Uruguay v Italy to have over 3.5 Goals, 2/1 (GENERAL)
