The Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland, is the home for the PGA tour this week on a course that has been described as one of the toughest in North America. Just 14 players broke par in the AT&T National last year and without Tiger Woods and Justin Rose this looks a wide open battle. Here is our guide to the best of the bets from this tournament.
Bookmakers make Adam Scott the 12/1 (GENERAL) favourite and you can see why as he finished third in this event last year. The Australian has been solid if not spectacular since winning the US Masters a few months ago and is sure to feature. Although the most talented player in the field I can not advise backing him at this price.
Jason Day is the second favourite and is a 14/1 (GENERAL) chance for victory. The Australian was second in the 2011 US Open here and was second in the 2013 US Open which was his last time out on a course. He is one who has to be respected though he does not make the staking plan.
Hunter Mahan is the 18/1 (boylesports/paddy Power/STAN JAMES) third favourite and I can not be siding with him after he looked tired when coming tied 24th in the Travelers. The American does have a good record here coming top 12 in his last four appearances at Maryland, I would worry though if he is over his US Open disappointment.
Brandt Snedeker is a 20/1 (GENERAL) chance and he comes here on the back of a tied 17th in the US Open and six top ten finishes on the season. He has two top ten finishes here aready (2007 and 2009) and looks one to be respected.
Three who just missed my shortlist are Billy Horschel (22/1-GENERAL) who has form with six top ten finishes in his last eight events including a tied fourth at the US Open. Rickie Fowler at 25/1 (GENERAL) was also tempting as the American has carried my money in the last two weeks and produced some excellent Golf at times. Bo Van Pelt at 33/1 (GENERAL) is another who made the longlist as the America was runner-up to Tiger Woods last year and has finished in the top 12 in four of his last five outings in this event. Van Pelt is in good form this seasonwith six top 25 finishes on the Tour.
The headline selection is Kevin Chappell who finished tied third in the US Open here in 2011 and finished as a runner up in the Memorial on his penultimate start (his fourth top ten finish of the campaign). He can be backed at 55/1 to win with 888 SPORT or 50/1 with the firms paying five places EW or 45/1 BETVICTOR who are paying six places EW.
Another player to add to the portfolio is Robert Garrigus who is 80/1 (GENERAL). He goes again on a course that he loves having came fourth here last year and third in the US Open in 2011. Garrigus has been badly out of form something that could be put down to the birth of a new baby in May. Take a chance though that he can get his game back together at generous odds.
Finally I would recommend an interest in David Lingmerth to finish in the top ten at 10/1 (bet365/STAN JAMES/CORAL). The Swede has two second places to his names in his rookie year on the PGA Tour and he is a previous winner at Maryland on the Web.com Tour.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Kevin Chappell each-way in the AT&T NATIONAL, 45/1 (BETVICTOR)
SILVER: Robert Garrigus each-eay in the AT&T NATIONAL, 80/1 (GENERAL)
BRONZE: David Lingmerth to finish in the top ten, 10/1 (bet365/STAN JAMES/CORAL)
