League 2

We begin our second part guide to the upcoming League Two season with a look at the relegation market. The final day of last season saw some seven teams still in danger of relegation from League Two and it could be as close this time around with as many as eight teams 10/1 or under and a further nine between 11/1 and 20/1.

Accrington are 9/2 (SKYBET/ladbrokes) to be relegated and you can see why as they have a rookie manager in James Beattie who is working on a very small budget. It looks to be a long season of struggle for Stanley and their fans. Dagenham and Redbrige are also 9/2 (bet365/SKYBET) for the drop and the Daggers who just survived on goal difference last season will struggle again this season.

Morecambe are another side who are expected to struggle at 5/1 (GENERAL) as AFC Wimbledon 7/1 (BETVICTOR) and Newport (8/1-BETVICTOR) though the Welsh side should have no problems staying up this season.

Those looking for value should look at Southend who are 20/1 (STAN JAMES/CORAL). Phil Brown was so desperate to get into management he did not look as to what he was getting into at Southend and what he was getting into was a mess. The club have limited finances and have lost a lot of their best players for last season and they look a great back-to-lay option.

The top goalscorer market is headed by Portsmouth striker Tom Craddock (insert the Jeff Stelling joke about his mother Fanny here) who can be backed at 16/1 (paddy Power). It seems a very small price on a player who grabbed just ten goals for Oxford last season and will likely share the goals with David Connolly who is a 20/1 (bet365/CORAL) chance.

Marc Richards is next in the betting at 18/1 (SKYBET/boylesports/STAN JAMES) and the Chesterfield man will be looking to build to the 11 goals he grabbed last season in an injury hit season. With the Spireites expected to go well this season I think he too will go well and has to be backed behind some real midfield talent.

Others expected to go well are Oxford front man Dave Kitson, evergreen Jamie Cureton, Eoin Doyle and Jamille Matt all of whom are available at 20/1.

Those looking for a bit of value in the market might want to consider John O’Flynn who is a 100/1 (TOTESPORT/betfred) chance and this looks a decent price on a player who has netted 11 goals last season. This season I think he will push on especially with Jamie Cureton gone from the club and a chance that he could be on penalties.

Of all the special bets the one I like the most is Newport at 7/2 (CORAL) to top their group betting market. The Welsh side are new to the division this year though they will not be taken lightly as Justin Edinbugh seems a shrewd manager and he has the financial backing to push them to a top half finish this season. That should be enough to come top of a group that is full of teams who will struggle this season, Torquay, AFC Wimbledon, Morecambe, Accrington and Dagenham and Redbridge..

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Newport to win Coral group bet, 7/2
SILVER: Marc Richards to be top goalscorer in League 2, EW 18/1 (SKYBET/boylesports/STAN JAMES)
BRONZE: John O’Flynn top goalscorer in League 2, EW 100/1 (TOTESPORT/betfred)
