Manchester United v Hull City - Premier League Preview

Manchester United come into their final match of the Premier League season in a position to which they are ill accustomed. Usually this is the time of the season where the Theatre of Dreams bears witness to matches that are critical in the ultimate destination of the title. This term the disastrous form that they have experienced means that this game with Hull is pretty much a pyrrhic battle.

It’s hard to imagine that Hull are going to spitting blood to get something out of this one either. There is no doubt that Hull also will have at least half a mind on the FA Cup final. It looked as if it would be possible for the away side to still be mathematically relegated going into this game, but results have gone in their favour and their Premier League place is already confirmed.

Thus, this isn’t a game with a lot on it. But there may be a couple of issues which will motivate the two teams going into it. United are at least playing for Ryan Giggs, with the player-manager hoping to secure a permanent role in the Old Trafford hierarchy is some denomination or other. . It looks a done deal that Louis van Gaal will be taking over at the helm at Old Trafford in the next few months, but Giggs will hope to make himself indispensable to the new manager with some good results before the end of the season.

This is hardly the case after the sunderland game at Old Trafford, in which United turned in another dismal home performance. United slipped to another disappointing home defeat at the hands of Sunderland, with the Black Cats looking considerably more motivated than the home side. The obvious difference in this game is that United are facing a home side with little motivation, and one that is free of the spectre of relegation.

United’s home form this term has been pretty abysmal. It has almost always been a massive strength for them in previous seasons, but this year even as this late stage in the season they have only won one more home game than they’ve lost, and they actually face the ignominious prospect of failing to win more home games than defeats should they lose at home to Hull in this one.

The Tigers aren’t the best travellers, though. Hull have only won three Premier League games away from their home turf this season, losing a round dozen. This is the sort of game that in normal seasons would be considered a gimme for United, but their lack of form and confidence is such that there just don’t seem to be any certainties for them at present.

Nonetheless, United are the better side, they don’t have a cup final to worry about, and they’ll want to at least leave their fans with something positive to take into the summer. I think United will come out on top here with a fairly comfortable victory.
