The attention at pretty much all tennis tournaments nowadays is centred on the singles. But doubles is still very much a valid part of the game, so this article will look at which three pairings will carry off the doubles crowns at Roland Garros

Men’s Doubles

The favourites for pretty much every doubles tournaments are the Bryan Brothers, but this time round they have be eliminated by Marcel Granollers and Marc López of Spain. The Spanish pair will now meet Marin Draganja and Florin Mergea for a place in the final, and must go into that match as strong favourites.

The other semi-final will see French favourites Julien Benneteau and Édouard Roger-Vasselin meet Andrey Golubev and Australia’s Samuel Groth. Certainly the French pair are more experienced and have the better pedigree, so I can’t see Groth and Golubev troubling them too much.

Thus, I think France and Spain will play off in the final, and it’s hard to bet against the country most associated with clay court tennis, so I’m going for a Marcel Granollers and Marc López victory

Women’s Doubles

One of the highlights of the entire French Open fortnight has been the form of the young Spanish player Garbiñe Muguruza, and she and her fellow quarter-finalist Carla Suárez Navarro have a good shot at winning the doubles. However, the pair will have to get past the number one seeds Hsieh Su-wei and Peng Shuai in order to do so, but both played so well in the singles that I’m tipping them to do it.

Another singles quarter-finalist, Sara Errani, will contest the other semi-final, as Errani and compatriot Roberta Vinci take on Lucie Hradecká and Michaëlla Krajicek . Errani and Vinci are the number two seeds and strong favourites for this one, and not only do I think they’ll make the final, I think they’ll ultimately win it to secure their fifth Grand Slam title together.

Mixed Doubles

Always the hardest of the three doubles events to call, the mixed doubles semi-final this year feature a number of players that aren’t particularly well known. The most notable pairing is that of Julia Goerges and Nenad Zimonjic, but few observers will have heard of the pairing of Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Jean-Julien Rojer. Indeed, the Dutchman Rojer is currently ranked outside of the world’s top 1,000 singles players.

It is hard to bet against the more experienced pairing coming out on top. Zimonjic has been ranked world number one in doubles, while Gorges is an accomplished singles and doubles player, and has been ranked in the top twenty in the world for both. Thus, my tip for this title is Julia Goerges and Nenad Zimonjic.
