Ted Potter, Scott Stalings, Stuart Appelby, the list of winners of the Greenbrier Classic does not exactly read like a whose who of the Golfing World. This is good news for punters as it means value can be had in an event that presents a more even playing field than others on the PGA Tour. This because the Classic has only been running for three years.
Bookmakers make Phil Mickelson the 14/1 (GENERAL) favourite as he makes his return to action following a break after the US Open where he finished as runner-up. The American is the undoubted class act in the field though his struggles at this course suggest his price does not represent value. Mickelson has failed to make the cut here on each of his last two appearances not once shooting a round below Par. I like the look of Webb Simpson as he is in good form and has a tied ninth in 2011 followed by a tied seventh in 2012 at this venue. The 16/1 (GENERAL) on offer though looks a little short especially with the player perhaps having memories of his collapse here in the last round in 2012 when going in as leader.
Bubba Watson is a 22/1 (BETVICTOR/888 SPORT) chance and he arrives here on the back of a tied fourth at the Travelers. The American has not played here before and with plenty of players available at a better price I will look elsewhere. Bill Haas is also a 22/1 (GENERAL) chance and is clearly in top form having won at the AT&T National on Sunday combined with the fact he finished second here in 2011 and he may have his supporters. It is tough though to double up with victories and as such I would suggest the odds are a little short.
Graham DeLaet is the first of our three selections and can be backed at 28/1 (CORAL/betway) for victory. You can take reduced odds of 25/1 (BETVICTOR/paddy Power) who will pay six places each-way. The Canadian gets the selection as he is in good form with five top ten finishes this year. He also has a good record here with the third lowest stroke average at the course and never going over par in his eight previous rounds at the course.
In terms of stroke average another who appeals is Charlie Wi who has the lowest stroke average of any player at the course. Wi was tied here for third in 2012 and has never gone over par in his eight previous rounds. After a terrible run of form Wi looked to be finding something of his game when coming seventh in the AT&T National. Wi can be backed at 80/1 (GENERAL) and this looks a good each-way bet.
The final player for the portfolio is Gary Woodland who should do well in a course suited for his game. Woodland tied for 16th at the AT&T National which was his third top 20 in his last four starts. Throw in the fact that he was tied for fourth here in 2011 and he looks value. He can be backed at 50/1 (sportingbet/paddy Power) and the long hitter is one to be added to the portfolio.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Graham DeLaet, EW at 25/1 (BETVICTOR/paddy power)
SILVER: Gary Woodland, EW at 50/1 (sportingbet/paddy power)
BRONZE: Charlie Wi, EW at 80/1 (GENERAL)
