Timea Bacsinszky is the current second favourite to take home the WTA Monterrey title. The Switzerland-born athlete can be backed at 11/2 at Betvictor, just behind the current tournament market leader Ana Ivanovic who`s available at 13/10 at paddy Power. Should the former want to pick up her second title of the year, and third of her career, she will have to see off Ukraine`s Lesia Tsurenko who is the outsider of the whole competition at 80/1 (paddy Power). The fourth seed and Tsurenko will meet at 21:00 tonight in the second round of the Mexican Open.
Whilst this is the first time that either player has played in Monterrey, the two women have met on-court before, Bacsinszky holding a one match to nil record over her Ukrainian opponent. This encounter came back in the second round of the Acapulco Open this year, the victor winning the first set 6-2 prior to capturing the match thanks to a tie-break.
The 25-year-old would go on to see off Johanna Larsson, Sesil Karatantcheva and, latterly, Carline Garcia on her way to winning the title. Bacsinszky would only drop one set in the whole tournament, that being in the opener of her opening match against Holland`s Richel Hogencamp. A number of bookmakers have the two-time WTA winner at 11/10 to see of Tsurenko in straight sets whilst 31/10 with 32red, 888sport and unibet says that she will take the match in three sets as was necessary against the Dutch qualifier.
Indeed Bacsinszky is the favourite to secure victory over Tsurenko, also 25. The world number 31 can be backed at odds of 4/9 (Bwin, Coral, Stan James) to make her way past her second round rival. Meanwhile, the best price on a win for the underdog is 2/1. It is Betvictor who have the best price on that outcome.
The Lausanne-born favourite needed three sets to see off Belgium`s Yanna Wickmayer in the opening stage of the competition. The 5`7" player took the first set through a hard fought tie-break before losing the second when only winning three games. Bacsinszky rallied to claim the third 6-4.
Betfair have 13/5 on one of tonight`s sets being decided by a tie-break. bet365 have odds of 3/10 should you want to bet against there being one in the match. Both betfair and Coral have 6/1 on there being a tie-break in the opening stage again whilst the same price, at the same bookmakers, says that there will be a tie-break played in the second set.
Tsurenko got this far by putting Shelby Rogers to the sword, losing only two games in the entire set. Both these games came in the opener as the Volodymyrets-born 85 rank scooped set one by six games to two. She the recorded a bagel victory in the second to take the entire match.
Betfair have odds of 13/2 on there being a 6-0 victory in tonight`s clash whilst 1/12 with the same bookmakers says that one won`t be recorded between the two women. william hill`s 14/1 says that it will be recorded in the first set whilst having the best price of 10/1 on it occurring in the second.
Her victory in Acapulco has been Bacsinszky`s 2015 high point though she had also reached the Shenzhen final at the beginning of the year, losing out to Simona Halep 6-2, 6-2. The Swiss player went on to record a third round finish in the Australian Open but will be looking for back-to-back triumphs in Mexico here.
Tsurenko had something of a torrid time down under, being knocked out in the first round of both the Sydney and Brisbane International tournaments before failing to register a win in the first Grand Slam of the year.
