Aston Villa will look to recover from their 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal by seeing off league leaders Chelsea at home tomorrow afternoon. The Villa Park outfit are only three points above the relegation zone but could rise to as high as 13th with a victory over the Blues. Jose Mourinho`s men, however, are looking to extend their five point dominance at the top of the top tier of English football.
The last time the two sides met was at Stamford Bridge back in September, Chelsea running out the 3-0 winners over Paul Lambert`s Midlands club. Attacking midfielder Oscar scored the only goal of the first half before Diego Costa doubled his team`s advantage. Willian`s strike saw the Blues seal the win ten minutes from time.
As a result of this previous fixture and Chelsea`s vastly superior league position, they are the 2/5 favourites with Betvictor to secure all three points away from home tomorrow. A replica 3-0 win can be backed at 17/2 with Betvictor. A draw has been best priced at 17/4 by bet365 whilst Aston Villa are a massive 11/1 to record a home win against the title contenders.
There are many reasons for this lack of faith in Villa, not least the fact that they have only bagged eleven goals in the Premier League this season. Consequentially, they are 8/1 with Coral to score two or more times tomorrow. Despite this, the side have only lost once in their last five games at Villa Park in the league, that was a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool back in January.
Prior to this, Lambert led his relegation flirters to a 2-1 win over fellow strugglers Leicester City, though they had to come from behind to snatch the win from the Foxes. Ciaran Clark had to level up following Leonardo Ulloa`s deadlock breaker in the first half before Alan Hutton`s first goal for the club sealed only their second home victory.
What followed was three successive draws. Firstly the 1-1 tie with Manchester United in which striker Christian Benteke put Villa in front before Radamel Falcao`s second half header. Goalless draws with Sunderland and Crystal Palace followed.
The potential challenge Chelsea pose is evident in the odds supplied for the home side to keep a third consecutive Villa Park clean sheet. Six-to-one with betfair and Spreadex says the ball won`t be put past Brad Guzan in the Villa net whilst a Villa win to nil is 16/1 with Skybet.
This is because the Blues have scored in every match in all competitions since their last game in November, that`s at least one goal in every game for the past 19 matches. They have scored 12 goals in their last five league games away from home, the equivalent of just over two a match. Mourinho`s men can be backed at 9/4 with Coral to score over 2.5 goals against Villa.
This potent streak has come in spite of having recorded two losses in these last five Premier League games away from Stamford Bridge. Their first was a 2-1 loss at the hands of Newcastle back in December and saw the end of their 23 game unbeaten run. Didier Drogba bagged the only goal for the Blues. Chelsea`s second loss in this period came away at Spurs, an eight goal thriller ending 5-3 to the home side. Costa, Eden Hazard and John Terry all found their names on the scoresheet but to no avail.
Prior to this clash, Stoke were put to the sword 2-0 at the Britannia Stadium thanks to Terry and Cesc Fabregas whilst Hazard scored in a 1-1 tie with Southampton at St Mary`s.
Mourinho`s men bounced back from their Spurs defeat by seeing off Swansea 5-0 at the Liberty Stadium. Oscar and Costa both scored first half braces whilst now Wolfsburg man Andre Schurrle put the cherry on top of the cake in the second 45.
Loic Remy is the 4/1 favourite to bag the first goal of the match after top scorer Costa was banned for a stamp on Liverpool`s Emre Can in the League Cup.
