Bookmakers seem convinced that Miami Heat will secure the NBA title and are as short 5/11 (paddy Power/BWIN) to do so. Miami deserve to be the favourites for this game as they have in LeBron James the best player in the game. In addition they have home advantage in the seven game series which could be crucial. The Spurs though can be backed at 2/1 (boylesports/YOU WIN) and here is five reasons why that is huge value.
1: THE SPURS HAVE FOUR OF THE FIVE FORM PLAYERS IN THE SERIES
If you were to create a starting five from these two teams using the form players have shown in the play-offs then four of these five players would belong to the San Antonio Spurs (Duncan, Parker, Ginobli, Leonard) and just one to Miami (James). In fact so much were Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade and Ray Allen absent during the series with Indiana that TV analyst Reggie Miller joked that the team should be re-named the Miami Cavaliers.
2: SAN ANTONIO DOMINATED THEIR CONFERENCE FINAL
If you look at the regular season records of the two sides beaten in the Conference finals you will see that Memphis had a win record of .683 while Indiana had a .605 record. The Spurs dismantled Memphis in four games while Miami were pushed to the wire by Indiana in seven.
3: GREGG POPOVITCH IS THE BETTER COACH
The Spurs have in Gregg Popovitch a master coach who in four previous finals that he has coached San Antonio have gone on to win. The Spurs have spent the last few weeks using the blueprint offered by Indiana on how to put the Heat on the ropes and tweaking it so they know how to deliver the knockout blow.
4: SAN ANTONIO ARE FRESHER
The Spurs have played just 14 games postseason compared to the 16 Miami have had. San Antonio have been sitting resting their injuries for a long time while Indiana were pushing Miami to the brink. Throw in the fact that Duncan, Ginobli and Parker were regularly rested through the season and the Spurs should have the fresher legs.
5: DEFENCE WINS GAMES
Is the old saying in the NBA and the Spurs can do it better than anyone. They are lockdown specialists with a plan for each team. Take the Memphis series as an example the Grizzlies averaged 42.6 points in the paint in the regular season and the Spurs restricted them to 36. Golden State shot 40.3% from three point range in the regular season, the Spurs restricted them to 36.8% and just 25% in game six.
If like me you think the Spurs can win this series then you might also want to consider a bet on the Finals MVP with the market dominated by LeBron James at 7/15 (888 SPORT). I think Tony Parker at 3/1 (STAN JAMES/888 SPORT) and Tim Duncan at 8/1 (STAN JAMES) look great value. Both players are likely to be put up great numbers in the series.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: San Antonio to be win the NBA Championship, 2/1 (boylesports/YOU WIN)
SILVER: Tony Parker to be the finals MVP, 3/1 (STAN JAMES/888 SPORT)
BRONZE: Tim Duncan to be the finals MVP, 8/1 (STAN JAMES)
