The first thing to note about betting on the League Cup is that stakes should be kept low as unlike the league you can not be sure of the importance of the competition for each team. Managers might be tempted to rotate their players as fitness levels are low at this time of the season and they have another game next weekend. That being said some value can still be found so here is our guide to the best of the bets from the first round matches.
The live game Tuesday night is between Morecambe and Wolves with the home side the 3/1 (GENERAL) outsiders. The Shrimps will be looking to repeat the 2007 meeting in this competition where they won through at Molineux. Wolves boss Kenny Jackett has a large squad so might rest a few here with the league his priority which might explain why his side are 21/20 (BETVICTOR).
The draw could be in play at 5/2 (GENERAL) as Wolves had not lost any of their last seven games in the opening round of this competition while Morecambe have not lost any of their last three first round games in this tournament. Those who want to place a bet on the game should look to the anytime scorer market where Jack Sampson is a 7/2 (SKYBET) chance and the Morecambe striker could cause the Midlands back-line a number of problems.
The bet I like the look of most in this round is the 21/20 (bet365) on Shreswbury and the draw in the double chance market in their game with Bolton. The Championship side struggled to create chances against Burnley at the weekend and with the influential Chris Eagles missing here they could be vulnerable to an upset.
Shrewsbury started the season with a respectable draw against the MK Dons and will take heart from a home record that has seen them lose just three of their last 17 home games.
Rewind back to 2001 when a Roy Essandoh goal saw Wycome defeat Leicester in the FA Cup Quarter Finals. Fans of the Chairboys will have that moment commited to their memory and there could be more famous moments when these sides meet on Tuesday evening. Wycombe are 6/5 (bet365/BETVICTOR/STAN JAMES) with the draw in the double chance market and that seems a generous price as they are unbeaten at home in competitive fixtures since February, Throw in the fact that Leicester will likely rest a few with the league a priority and you have the makings of an upset.
I want to end with a quick recommendation on the outright market where Norwich look a generous 80/1 (CORAL) each-way chance. A lot depends on the draw but the Canaries have bought well in the transfer market and are capable of beating anyone on their day as shown last season when they defeated Tottenham, Arsenal, Man Utd and Man City last season.
The Canaries have been in the Premier League for two seasons now and are now in a position to really go for a good run in the cup this season. As Swansea showed last year and Birmingham in 2011 this represents the best chance for a midtable side to win a trophy.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Shrewsbury/Draw in double chance market v Bolton, 21/20 (bet365)
SILVER: Wycombe/Draw in double chance market v Leicester, 6/5 (bet365/BETVICTOR/STAN JAMES).
BRONZE: Norwich EW to win the League Cup, 80/1 (CORAL)
