Phil Taylor is a hard man to oppose with the way he is playing darts right now and I could not put anyone of him backing at 11/8 (BETVICTOR/YOU WIN) to win the seventh staging of the Grand Slam of Darts which features players from both the BDO and PDC. The event starts in a group format so I will recommend holding all bets on the Power as the short matches could see him slip up once which could really expand his price. In terms of group betting Taylor is a 2/7 (william hill) chance to win his group which he should do. Paul Nicholson, Kevin Painter and Stuart Kellett are all dangerous oppponents in the short form of game so stay clear of the 2/7.
In Group B James Wade is the head of the market at 15/8 (GENERAL) and after reaching the semi-final of the Coral Masters the Machine will be in confident mood. Gary Anderson is the 5/2 (SKYBET) second favourite ahead of Peter Wright 13/5 (SKYBET) and Wesley Harms 15/2 (BOYLESPORT) and the bookmakers seem to have this priced about right.
Adrian Lewis is hard to oppose in Group C after his final appearance at the Coral Masters, though he does not appeal at short odds. Elsewhere in the group it will come down to a battle between Christian Kist, Ronnie Hybrechts and Richie George. I like the 7/4 (SKYBET) that the Belgian can qualify ahead of Kist. The Dutchman exited the BDO World Championships in the first round and has since had a poor year on the circuit. People taking about the draw being tough for Taylor but I actually think it is tougher for Van Gerwen. Mighty Mike has the in-form Kim Huybrechts, 2012 semi-finalist Dean Winstanley and Vincent van der Voort. This is a tough group from a betting point of view and although it is an interesting one to watch I can not be siding with anyone.
Group E features the defending champion Raymond van Barneveld who is 4/5 (boylesports) to come out on top of his group. Barney is in reasonable form having reached the semi-finals of the Masters event and winning a Players event in Ireland and I would expect him to come through this group. He will be joined one of Mervyn King, Tony O’Shea and Ricky Evans. It will likely come to do a battle between King and O’Shea with both players 10/11 (SKYBET) to qualify.
Group F is perhaps the most open of all the groups with Andy Hamilton, Robert Thornton and Justin Pipe all short in the betting. I think all three players are beatable so I can not understand the 11/1 (boylesports) offered on Mark Walsh winning the group. Walsh is in the top 30 in the PDC Order of Merit and won two group games last time around. He should also be backed at 10/3 (SKYBET) in the to qualify market.
Simon Whitlock is the man expected to come out on top in Group G and the Australian is 11/10 (SKYBET/CORAL) to do so in first place. The Wizard was eliminated in the group stages last season though seems to have an easier passage this time around. Wes Newton is expected to provide the competition at odds of 7/4 (GENERAL) while Mark Webster (8/1-GENERAL) and Ross Smith 10/1 (SKYBET) round off the group.
Group H is the eighth and final group and betting here is headed by Dave Chisnall at 11/10 (SKYBET/CORAL/paddy Power). Chsinall has had a good year on the Tour and made his first final of a Major in the World Grand Prix before going down to Taylor. Scott Waites the BDO Champion is also in the group and will be a tough opponent while Michael Smith and Ted Hankey complete the group.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Mark Walsh to qualify from Group F, 10/3 (SKYBET)
SILVER: Ronnie Hybrechts to qualify from Group C, 7/4 (SKYBET
BRONZE: Mark Walsh to win Group F, 11/1 (BOYLESPORTS)
